Externalizing harmful feelings is a lost art.
A lot of people probably experience conflict between their goals/values, & their distress tolerance capacity. And then they struggle because they consider their pathologies to be a more important aspect of self and identity than their goals & values.

I think sometimes when people — and especially people who do not have mental illness — go to therapy it makes them worse because instead of learning valuable skills like emotional regulation and containment they just learn to recognize their feelings and make them other people’s problems.
