This is accurate
you know how when you were a little kid you could go up to people and be like, “you, girl with the pink ponytail, do you want to be friends?” and then you were friends?

you can also do that as a grownup; they don’t want you to know this, but people hardly ever say no

Sometimes I like to leave the closet light on when I go to sleep so I can pretend there’s a portal in my room and I can go through it and be ELSEWHERE as soon as I wake up if I want to

I think the most absurd part is all the writers thought AI would destroy humanity because AI would get too smart, but they didn’t realize that years of de-prioritizing the humanities would actually make the people who made AI so stupid that it’s going to be the stupidity that kills us and lollllsob
Goddamn. We were so worried about the Evangelical armageddon freaks, but it's actually the AI cult that's going to kill us all.

one way I know I’m dreaming is I look up at the moon and it refracts into a lot of moons, so anyway, it’s always a little weird when I’m pretty sure I’m awake and I see something similar! (especially when it’s 1am and I’m in bed lol)
Cool shot of the moon tonight with little copycat moons beside it

Used to work at a writing conference in Provo, Utah and once had to covertly rush a NYC editor out of a dining establishment as she was gushing about how nice everyone was because she had no idea one of the people she was talking to was about to do a violence lol
Slightly exaggerated, but I’ve pointed out before that I can converse with a Mormon and a non-Mormon and communicate a thousand things to the Mormon that the Non-Mormon won’t pick up.
(most Mormon communication takes place in the subtext, not text, which makes for fascinating social dynamics)

my child: I think lots of authors don’t know they have to let the audience think they are thinking of themes themselves, they can’t think the author did it

me: it’s gotta be subtextual

me: WAIT THIS IS WHY MORMON YA AUTHORS ARE SO GOOD

my child: I wrote a paper about it; Mormons & subtext

we’ve been experimenting with non-paper assignments in lit classes because of AI, so my YA Lit class just did an oral “book talk” where they sat in small groups for 10 min and talked about a particular book while I listened and it was a little chaotic but I really like hearing their actual thoughts!

Regular reminder that there's an incredible alternative to Audible and Spotify
If you happen to be looking for an alternative audiobook listening platform, there are many out there, including us at Libro.fm 👋

We aim to build community in many ways, including by supporting independent bookshops with every purchase you make—versus tearing communities apart.
