one of the things i've been saying for years at this point is that the american republic ended in 1946, when the presidency was given sole control over nuclear weapons. like in post-augustus rome, what came after preserved the forms of the republic, but was fundamentally different in substance.
The precedent set here is the end of Congress, which I don't think Congress will even notice

I keep saying: states are going to have to step up their prosecutions, especially for white collar offenses. They can't rely on the feds to protect their residents.

This one really is useful because you won’t see a more clear demonstration of one of the most damaging political phenomena of the era: the reactionary professional mind rejecting unacceptable reality, only able to process and comprehend it via something close to conspiracy theory.

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

I suspect this very much applies to politics across the anglosphere. regrettably, there will be a tendency to discuss this as if these operations 'caused' all of this awful shit, but it's merely catalyzing pre-existing contradictions in society rather than creating them.
God it's so cool that so much of British and European nationalist politics has broadly been shaped by warehouse clickfarms rented by guys in South Asia running "how to make money from racist old people" workshops, and that this has had more influence on media and politics than any grassroots group

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Counterpoint: I also live in a country where, decades ago, an elected leader was shot in the street, and nobody knows who did it (to all intents and purposes who shot JFK is known), and trust in politics is relatively high; if jfk’s murder exposed anything, it was something that was already there.
My first political memory - exactly 62 years ago right now, a 4-year-old boy trying to understand his mom's tears - is still the biggest event in my lifetime. We still (IMO) don't *really* know who killed JFK, but we know the public's trust was shattered. It's a straight line to today's mess

She was then arrested, labelled a “domestic terrorist” and slandered on social media.
