This is very confusing, @nytimes.com. How can both of these things be true at the same time?

CBP chief Bovino has confirmed that the officers who executed Alex Pretti in the street yesterday are not only *not on administrative leave,* they have all been reassigned to other jurisdictions and are all on the street today.

This is totally unheard of for any officer-involved shooting

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

ICE and DHS are out of control and making our communities less safe.

I will not support funding for DHS without clear accountability and stronger controls over the agency.

It is time for the Senate to do its job and rein in this lawlessness.

ICE has now carried out two summary executions of innocent people in the streets of an American city.

If you work for ICE, there's no denying that's the mission you're supporting now. You don't get to claim in one year or ten or twenty that you didn't know what ICE was doing. You're complicit.

I would like Democrats to understand that doing literally anything is not the escalation they think it is. Doing something is DE-ESCALATION. Doing nothing is ESCALATION because it will cause people to take matters into their own hands.
once again i am asking literally anyone in a position of power to do literally anything so that our neighbors stop getting fucking murdered in the street

This is where we are as a country.

Don't post too aggressively because there's a very real concern for harm.

Bill of Rights who? I don't know them.
Do not say anything here you don't want read back to you in court.

Also drives home how cowardly the GOVERNING class is.

Ahem, Senators @schumer.senate.gov and @klobuchar.senate.gov.

What are you doing for Americans?

Especially you, Senator Klobuchar. You ARE a Midwestern mom. Why the heck aren't YOU out leading those courageous frozen protesters today?
Seeing a bunch of normal ass midwestern moms and dads marching in -20 degrees knowing they might be tear gassed or worse really drives home what a cowardly lot of people the pundit class is

This is me speaking stuff into existence: @weratedogs.com and @musicologyduck.bsky.social in an interview double feature on This American Life (The episode is tentatively titled—in my head obviously—Good Dogs/Good Ducks) and Good Hang with Amy Poehler.

Together. Why? Mostly same positive vibes.
Have seen many variations of this & broadly agree—but the part that struck me in the moment wasn’t “this is a microcosm for how America sucks” — it was “this is a microcosm for trying to behave democratically & respectfully of one another in a complex, evolving situation with things we can't know.”
i feel like the viral bus thread resonates because at every step of the way you're like "ok surely this will be resolved shortly, any second now," which seems like what all the passengers are also thinking. then the fact that the situation doesn't resolve and the bus just keeps going is an Allegory

Do this.

So you can find things like -- a local company providing $127,000 for pepper spray to ICE.

The street view is of an utterly inconsequential building in the middle of not much.

(Plus all of the other random unexamined crap they apparently provide to the govt. Who are these people?)
Great piece. I’ll add to Andrea’s ideas for action this one: go to USA spending dot gov and look up active ICE contractors who do business in your state. Then organize boycotts and protests of those businesses.
I wrote about how concentration camp regimes evolve and why it's not too late to stop this, even though we are deep in it now.

Hey, it is something! We're not getting solutions from any other lawmaker.

Silly seeming, to be sure. And probably unworkable in person. But at least the public has a chance at IDing specific bad actors after the next tragedy, even with face coverings.

The govt sure isn't going to do it for us.
A major population center is literally under siege and this guy wants to put bar codes on the death squads
I am introducing the Quick Recognition (QR) Act, which requires ICE and CBP officers to wear uniforms featuring QR codes. When scanned, the code would generate a digital ID displaying the officer’s name, badge number, and law enforcement agency.

ICE should be unmasked both physically and digitally.
