This was the largest man made explosion until the atomic bomb.
On this day in 1917, at least 1,782 people were killed, an estimated 9,000 others were injured, and large portion of the city of Halifax was destroyed due to a maritime accident involving a boat carrying US weapons to France for use in the inter-imperialist First World War.

I’m doing a second auction for Patch, a local charity that provides food, cloths and toys for people in poverty. At Christmas time they gift toys to kids who’ve had a referral. What could be more in the spirit of Christmas? This little wren is up for auction to raise money for toys. Please dig deep

I could change USPS to Canada Post and the United states to Canada and federal agency to Crown corporation and the sentence is still 100% true
USPS subsidizes a *lot* of shipping in the united states and characterizing it in terms of profit and loss is fundamentally a bad faith exercise given how many of it’s benefits are truly universal in a way that not all federal agencies are

Y'all this past week I've seen some baffling takes on Heated Rivalry by people who have zero knowledge or enjoyment of romance novels, romance narratives, or sex scenes as a storytelling device. "Uh where's the romance? Why are they boning so much???"

Related: I feel like a lot of the piracy vs buying discourse (🤢 that this is even a thing) gets framed as stealing money from individual authors vs. stealing from faceless corporate publishers when for most authors it’s about whether or not they’ll get to publish another book.

Snow has fallen followed by a blanket of ice. Beautiful but lethal. The studio is snug. The dog on an eiderdown. Through the window I see the Sunshine catching ice crystals and droplets falling from the field gate turn to diamonds before they hit the ground

Outside of Chicago, on the grounds of a former armory, decades ago an alliance of various orgs began restoring the prairie, and at Midewin Tallgrass Prairie they imported bison to roam the prairie once more. I love to visit my very large bi sons 💚🦬

Stand on the Appalachia Trail at night and you will know the answer to can a mountain haunt itself?
They're older than trees. And dinosaurs. And were maybe once as tall as the Himalayas.

Anything that old has to be riddled with spooky shit, obvs, but y'all. They are a SPECIAL KIND OF HAUNTED.
the Appalachian mountains are so ancient they predate the evolution of bones.

I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.
