When I was in Japan, I'd constantly see news like "prefecture government deciding to fund flu cure or new train line" and then I'd check US news and it was invariably "Researchers develop burger made entirely of cheese; White House spox claims Trump defecated in public 'to assert dominance' "

American century of humiliation is probably going to be so incredibly fun for everyone else on Earth. For us, uh, I hope y’all like corn and potatoes
The Canada-China relationship has been distant and uncertain for nearly a decade.

We’re changing that, with a new strategic partnership that benefits the people of both our nations.

you know this guy is a FOR REAL photographer because he's telling the story of his brutal, unconditional arrest by federal goons and can't help but slip in a gear review
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

Getty photographer was tackled by about 50 agents while covering Whipple.

He threw his camera at another photographer to prevent it from being confiscated.

Simple thing: the states are subordinate but separate sovereign powers in the US constitutional system. They have robust powers to self-govern and resist criminal and unconstitutional infringement from a corrupt, renegade federal executive. Tell the Feds to bring it.

Federal agents arrest a woman for "impeding"

A man nearby starts blowing a whistle while other observers honk their horns

The agents pepper-spray the man with the whistle, he continues, and they tackle him then arrest him

"Worse than Bush after Katrina" is a polling benchmark that I thought that partisan polarization had made impossible
Pollster: 58% of Americans say Trump's second term has been a failure. A year into term number two, Trump's numbers look worse than any other president. Trump is even worse than George W. Bush after Katrina and a long period in the Iraq War. This is really, really bad.

I find it necessary these days to affirm the obvious because the descent into fascism is mostly a continuous, not discrete, process so here it goes:

these are internal checkpoints by secret police for what is routine freedom of movement.
It’s been reported locally, but I’m not sure how much national notice this has gotten. As part of this invasion by shithead goons, they are putting ICE agents in jetbridges and other parts of the airport at Minneapolis-Saint Paul. If you are flying Delta via MSP, you are putting yourself at risk.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will begin checking documents of travelers and workers at MSP airport, with patrols inside jet bridges.

An underrated factor in "why don't people in wealthy societies have more kids" is changing societal norms that now expect even older kids to be chaperoned by an adult any time they are in public, and to be chauffeured by a parent as their only means of transportation
Older generations spent a lot less time parenting. Millennial dads spend nearly as much time parenting as Boomer moms did. Millennial and Gen X moms way more.

Icy pavement in Minnesota in January—truly outrageous.
