I mean, *very obviously* it was catastrophic to spend a decade all-channels blasting the public with ideas like “funding the NHS is self-indulgent nonsense for effete pricks having a circle-jerk of moral purity”. Wildly reckless idiocy, a bit of an abomination really. But that’s what happened.

It's your annual reminder that these next 4-5 days are prime "unsubscribe" days. You don't remember how you got on that list begging you to spend money? You no longer spend money at that outlet? Unsubscribe o'clock, baby.

He characterise an 80% drop as a "step in the right direction"
PM describes net migration of 205k as "a step in the right direction". His govt has no public position on a sustainable level of immigration is, nor any known process to decide what, why & how. Starmer is now implying he wants it significantly lower

Net migration drop ‘step in the right direction’ – Starmer
Net migration peaked at a record 944,000 in the year to March 2023 but has fallen sharply since then.

Huh. Looks like Cleared Hot - a modern successor to EA's old Strike series of helicopter shooters - is doing great. 1000 user reviews in a few days, 98% positive.

Right now it's just Episode 1 (defending Texas against corporate technocrat takeover), shareware style, with the others coming later.

star trek is about a utopian vision of the future bordering on fantasy where people someday will be able to make good choices about complicated problems by talking to each other and involving people who know about things
The thing about Star Trek is that the majority of it has the crew spending most of the episode trying to figure out, through arguing and investigating, what's the right thing to do in a complicated situation and I don't think any shows do that now? Like in a Very Special Episode but not all the time

AI kind of feels like the endgame of this bit Graeber described in the original Bullshit Jobs essay: these people have been so thoroughly cleaved from any sense of purpose that they resent those who have one. They hate artists for their skill and think poverty should be the price of having a calling

This is not *the far right* news. This is Sky, utterly mainstream, entirely and completely operating under the frame that "welfare spending is too high and needs to be cut". This is total received wisdom in the UK, even though it's not even close to true.
Ridge: "This is what I don't understand. I think you do believe we do spend too much money on welfare... I'm trying to work out why we've ended up with [this] budget"

Pressure e.g. this govt didn't want to scrap the two child benefit cap but they've been forced to
