not enough looking glasses to pass through at this point:

An entire family of Kansas Citians outed themselves as ICE agents and got USA Today to write an exposé because they felt that their work, as a family deporting other families, is wrongly demonized by the media.

They’re the victims, really.
Exclusive: A father and his three kids work for ICE. Why they do it
A father, daughter and twin sons are all ICE agents. They see themselves as crime fighters. Others see them as something far worse.

It is weird to me that the shooter would yell something into a 500-person classroom before shooting (indicating perhaps they have some sort of ideological message and don’t care about getting away) and we don’t have a sketch or even a description of them. (Were they short? Tall? Big gun? Small gun?)

I don’t use social media to argue about politics with strangers.

I use social media to talk to people about fish.

When I talk about fish on Bluesky, people ask me questions about fish.

When I talk about fish on Twitter, people threaten to murder my family because we’re Jewish.

It’s even worse than that, because there are multiple dudes from Wisconsin named Benjamin Erickson, and they’re all innocent.

I genuinely affirmatively think that it is now a democratic imperative to spend as much time as you can offline. Read more offline. Socialise more offline. Discuss media you consume with other people offline. Out there is a real world full of people looking for real human connection - seize it
Reading a bunch of books this year has really solidified for me how awful the internet is in comparison nowadays. Obviously in terms of general hostility but more generally in terms of lack of depth, insight, reading comprehension, base of knowledge, etc

This NYT story failed the reader by not digging deeper. One subject dropped out of college after one year (five years ago) and lists "Windows" as his skillset. Story should be: young conservatives who blame immigrants for their personal failures and whose lives won't be improved w/ fewer immigrants

Never let them live it down. Mass murder by the richest man in the world and Trump.
The human cost of Trump's gutting of USAID: By the time Tor Top’s mother was sick with cholera, the nearby clinic had been shuttered for weeks. He bundled her into a canoe & paddled toward the nearest hospital, 8 hours away. Less than halfway into the journey, his mother died.

Turns out, a website that amplifies hate only draws haters. Who'd ever have thought.
Elon's little serfs are quite literally begging journalists to come back because every publicly available source of data shows people have fled the platform and young people won't use it.

They are literally begging regular people to come back. Don't do it! It is a website by and for actual Nazis!

The real hero is a fruit stand owner named Ahmed el Ahmed.

ICE PEPPER SPRAYED A ONE-YEAR-OLD because her mother was filming them.
ICE pepper-sprayed this 1-year-old girl.

Once at the hospital, the doctor had to call in a poison control specialist.

They had never seen anyone that young pepper sprayed.

Another horrific story.

More details below.

The ACA isn't just "health care for people who don't have a conventional employer." It also disallows something that was incredibly common 20 years ago, which I fear is getting lost to generational memory: insurance companies could deny you health care for essentially any previous health problem.
I'm dubious about Amazon's commitment to keeping pre-existing conditions a thing of the past.

In which a Border Patrol agent and a youth minister abuse their adoptive daughter to death. The girl was homeschooled; the homeschool sponsors knew and did nothing. The family was evangelical; members of their church knew and did nothing. A San Diego police officer knew, and GAVE THE FAMILY PADDLES.
“Prosecutors say Arabella's adoptive father, Brian McCormack, a Border Patrol agent, would also be facing criminal charges if he were alive today. He took his own life in front of deputies just hours after Arabella died.”
San Diego County agrees to pay $10M over adopted girl’s death; total now $31.5M

What's striking about Trump's lies, and those of his apologists, is that they're not even plausible. They don't try to be plausible. As others have noted, that's kind of the point. True authoritarian control and power is telling a blatant and obvious lie, and showing you can get away with it.
Q: Can you explain what's going on with the bandages on Trump's hand?

LEAVITT: We've given you an explanation. The president is literally constantly shaking hands.

You can't politically eliminate Border protection. I mean we had it with Biden and they made it seem as though there was an invasion happening. But you can reorganize all of it and change the mission. It all needs to be gutted. ICE can be "folded into" Border Patrol again with 99% RIFd.
