(I do not count Annie Ernaux in this, Annie Ernaux is obviously in a category of her own and she knows what she's doing)

probably less "unhinged" and more "will lose me some friends" but I think the contemporary lit fic trend of very short pared down sentences is meant to seem clever and pretentious when it just makes people with no attention span/will to properly pay attention feel like they're reading Real Books

The rikishi are taking-in the town and doing what we all do when in London.
Seeing the sights, admiring the parks, shopping on High Street, taking tea at Fortnum's, using the olde phonebox, eating Chinese, and having a terrific time.

sometimes - it has to be very occasional, to keep its impact - I'll hate a book so much that once I'm done with it/have given up halfway through, I'll just throw it in the bin so no one has to suffer like I did, it's a real joy

One of the posts that got me flamed back in the old place was when I said I didn’t fetishise books as objects and wasn’t bothered if their owners wanted to rip them in half to make their baggage lighter or chuck them in the recycling once they’ve read them or whatever. Some people went ballistic

The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

Publishers should be invested in promoting the books they publish.

Can I recommend spending multiple months entirely alone in a flat and not being allowed to leave said flat?*

*I would not in fact recommend this

so my excuse is that I got SO bored doing lockdown alone that I ended up creating a massive Drive folder of basically any picture of me and/or a loved one worth saving that was findable on the internet, with keywords and years and everything, and I'm very glad I did it!

Keiran Culkin winning award after award after award while openly being like "yeah I read my lines for the first time like five minutes before going on set" was, I regret to say, such a good recurring bit of Succession, when Jeremy Strong was busy being Like That

YA shouldn’t exist as a separate category—it infantilizes teenagers who can/should just read regular books for adults. And don’t get me started on adults reading YA…

Auspicious start for the new CBS News, laundering unattributed cop shit-talking through the incoming editor-in-chief’s blog and failing to correct a misspelling of the story subject’s name in the web headline for three days.

Yeah, this is sadly very naive. They've already done it to trans rights (which let them undermine basic principles of bodily autonomy) and made strides on anti-abortion rights - their "free speech protesters" outside abortion clinics regularly get to launder their views via the TV and print media

Right-wingers who think tactics they've used to criminalize abortion in the US will have the same kind of traction in the UK fail to grasp that religious fundamentalism is widely viewed as nuts in the UK, & has been for many decades, if not centuries.

As much chance of abolishing UK gun controls.

The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"

This is such a good article btw - I really buy this as a theory of contemporary US politics
