Wish Halifax would drop the lip service to home owners' supposed disappointment in sluggish house prices. Just recognise that homes are for living in, not getting rich off, rising prices are bad, just like regular inflation, and better affordability for first time buyers is an unalloyed good thing

2018, Russia: "Fuck this, I'm not watching a World Cup in a fascist country. I'll just wait four years."

2022, Qatar: "Fuck this, I'm not watching a World Cup in a fascist country. I guess I'll wait another four years..."

2026: So I guess the joke is on me.

off to a house party later so went to buy wine on the way home and now need to get ready and have dinner before leaving again and, given the state of the weather outside, I think it's fair to say that the temptation to just crack open the bottle and stay in to play Hades II is......consequential

Correcting an earlier error - “You’ll have to prize it from my cold dead hands” was not, in fact, a design suggestion.
This is the most horrific trophy I’ve ever seen. It looks like a cursed object found in a desert crypt.

Reliant on a now three decade old approach to political comms. Equivalent to Blair copying Harold Wilson’s approach
This is exactly it. What's killing Labour on social media is "the mentality of the message". There simply is no way for the party to get back in the game without loosening up and allowing its MPs and councillors to start being themselves and saying what they think.

see that Variety's Actors On Actors is doing a Colin Farrell/Jessie Buckley mutual interview, or a "Marie derby", as I will be referring to it

two tech men having an incredibly annoying meeting next to me in the café and one of them just said "the thing I love about SEO is.....the culture", gobsmacking, beautiful piece of dialogue, would have struggled with it in a sitcom yet he just said it, in real life

A supposedly grassroots anti-migrant movement led by 'ordinary' women, which is backed by Reform and Conservative politicians and is regularly invited onto news channels to promote their views, is funded by a far-right group and has platformed a Neo-Nazi activist

ok Dorian got there in one neat post when my short thread still just sort of failed to get to the point:
It's revealing about taboos around racism that the visceral bullying racism of schoolboy Farage cuts through while the much more consequential thinly veiled racism of adult Farage doesn't. Many people need that veil and flinch when it's removed. You can advocate racist policies but not say the words

column maybe coming on this but I don't hugely care about what 61-year-old Farage got up to at school? and I think that Fleet Street finally gunning for him is symptomatic of a culture where the gotcha/scoop factor matters so much that hidden past actions are seen as worse than current, public ones

It sure looks like Russian intelligence attempted to use military drones to assassinate the President of Ukraine inside an EU country.

Looking forward to more thoughts from Belgium on why freezing Russian assets is an escalatory move that might compromise the peace process.

this is my last night in before a frankly horrific (and very much not purposely planned) run of seven nights out in a row, expect posting to get into a mighty downward spiral from Saturday onward, and only start recovering the Saturday after that, if we're lucky

considering developing the blistering hot take that actually you can't tell whether an American journalist is any good at writing until they publish a book, they're so intensely edited in the US press that you just can't have opinions on their actual prose otherwise
I just want to stress that this has nothing to do with the rest of the chapter. She has an epigraph, a bizarre intro paragraph, a description of Britney Spears dancing in 2002 and then a section about Donald Trump promoting birtherism.

it is an underrated miracle of the 21st century that we really did massively, massively reduce bullying in schools
My experience as well. So far we're 2-for-2 on kids having a largely bullying/abuse-free middle school experience. Not without bumpy spots of course, but light years away from what I endured.

My hot take: the anti-bullying stuff has really worked, which is why conservatives are pushing back at it.
for what it’s worth I got roped into helping out with my sixth grader’s extracurricular thing so I’ve had more recent contact with middle schoolers who aren’t mine than I usually do, and biased sample/biased reviewer/etc but my verdict is that the kids are all right
