I'm playing a lot of chess this year and one of the reasons why - other than just being a nerd who doesn't know when he's beat, what with how I'm fucking terrible at chess - is that it's instructive to get into a field that has been "solved" by AI for more than a generation.

the annoying thing about saying you work in publishing is that the question you get is "so do you ever want to write a book yourself?" and the reason is annoying is that for 95% of people in publishing the answer is "deep sigh]...yes"
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

extremely monkey's paw. we stopped speculating about the budget's contents but instead we get two months of "should the head of the OBR be ritually disembowelled on live television?" and "did Rachel Reeves bamboozle the simple folk of the nation with her shadowy witchcraft?"
it may not feel that way. it may feel like we are fated to dwell in this morass forever. but, by my blade, i swear to you that one day we shall actually see the Budget released and not have to speculate about it for six weeks solid jesus fucking christ i'm so fucking bored

honestly i know we hate the government but look at the polling on the two-child cap and remind yourself that it is also important to hate the electorate

both laughing at and fucking terrified of the website that sells various monstrously unethical animal research devices and uses AI images of the animals in question with the "cuteness" slider set to 100 for its marketing

i guess what i don't get about these doomer posts is, like, how in fact do fake pictures of non-existent influencers make things bad
this image was generated with google's latest nana banana pro tool. we have no idea how bad it is about to get.

"an extraordinary discovery? at this time of year, in this part of the country, on the Ness of Brodgar?"

"yes!"

"...may we see it?"

"...no."

Archaeologists are to resume digging at the site after 3D radar technology uncovered a mystery find.
