Three months ago I bought an old Superman comic and found an oddly familiar looking space telescope inside. Today, I've just had an article about it published by Scientific American!

How Superman Helped Launch the Hubble Space Telescope
Long before it orbited Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope starred in a famous Superman comic

TIL the first photograph that Neil Armstrong took on the Moon was of a bag of poo.
A white, tied up “jettison bag” full of human waste on the grey surface of the Moon next to the leg on the lunar module.

I’m an immigrant who taught secondary level students English Language & Literature at GCSE and A Level for 32 years.
I did not have A Level English Language.
Pricks.

Can't believe it's been 959 years since them slags got Harold Godwinson in the eye. It still freaks my nut out to this day.

The Superman Triangle Era Omnibus vol. 2 arrived today and I'm dead impressed that they've taken the trouble to include the fold out spread of Superman's death. The trade paperback I've got just divided it up into separate pages.

Post you from a different era.

Disguised as Morrissey, circa 2001.
Me, gloriously skinny and bare-chested, with glasses on, my hair gelled into a sort of quiff, marry me written on my chest in lipstick, spinning a blouse above my head.

I'm a dope and should have read the article. He is the laziest artist working in comics and I think joking about that is fair, but I don't want to mock him for having to give up his work because of health related reasons.

Deleted that post I made about Liefeld retiring as I foolishly didn't actually read beyond the headlines & didn't realise his eyesight is going.

It's really starting to look like Trump's insistence that he's ended several wars, along with his hankering for the Nobel Peace Prize, is part of some grotesque effort to balance the ledger with God. America has its very own Jimmy Savile and they made him President.

Trump: "I don't think there's anything that's gonna get me in heaven. I think I'm not maybe heaven bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to make heaven."

There is so much fun stuff that a real artist could have done with the concept of deliberately tacky, Flash Gordon-esque, promotional artwork. Instead we have this ugly looking rubbish that doesn't look like anything that's actually existed. They really do think we're mugs.

Someone tell me Disney didn't just use a bunch of fucking AI slop for the new Wonder Man show

Ain't this swell? By Jack Burnley and Stan Kaye, colored by Jack Adler. May 1947.

Look, just because Wonder Man suffers from crippling feelings of inadequacy that make him a liability & he's as strong as Thor but always gets his arse kicked & his biggest contribution to the Avengers was getting his brain waves swiped to make a better superhero...wait, where was I going with this?

One of the reasons Annie Hall is one of my favourite movies has always been how true it is. It's about affluent New Yorkers in the 70s but I recognise the people & the emotions & the relationships and Diane Keaton was such a huge part of that feeling of authenticity. RIP

Great news! Can't wait to see what you do with them. :)

A scene like that doesn't create monsters but it does create circumstances where monsters can rise to the top and become even worse monsters. Luckily we all learned our lesson at the end of the 2000s and none of that applies to the world we're living in today. :/
paulgcornish.bsky.social
Must emphasise cos this is Bluesky, I'm not defending him or making excuses for him. I just hated that scene at the time & I see him as an embodiment of that "ironic" detachment & nihilism pushed to the most extreme and deplorable degree.
paulgcornish.bsky.social
I'm definitely not saying that everyone who was part of that scene was as bad as him, but I can see how being surrounded by that attitude (& lots of fan-worship, money & drugs) could make a certain type of person escalate their behaviour until they were an absolute monster.

Re: Ian Watkins - I met people in that weird Welsh emo poser scene in the 2000s & there was definitely a sort of self-destructive nihilistic edge to it that found ironic humour, & even pride in being vain, selfish, & generally horrible. I always thunk about that when I hear the "megalolz" story.

DCKO's whole deal so far has been "sounds daft but is actually brilliant" and this announcement is entirely in keeping with that.

(Everyone should check out Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees by the way)

It occurs to me that the Doctor's polyethnic identity in recent times recontextualises Peter Davison's casting in quite an interesting way.
(For context, although you'd be unlikely to guess it by looking at him, Davison's paternal family is Guyanese. He has close relatives who are visibly Black.)
Peter Davison, a fair-skinned blond man, as the fifth Doctor, circa 1982.

Elizabeth Olsen here, accidentally putting her finger on why Marvel movies aren't as good as they used to be.

Headline on clickbait site:

MCU star Elizabeth Olsen is aware of superhero fatigue, and argues that "these movies aren't for
critics, these movies are for fans"

I'm suddenly compelled to read this again... can't imagine why. :)

Never listen to fans. We're idiots who demand the thin gruel of cameos & references over the nourishing meal of story & character & our appetite will never be sated.
paulgcornish.bsky.social
Loved the Peacemaker finale. No spoilers but I love how @jamesgunn.bsky.social prioritises what's right for the story & the characters over what fans say they want. It's like he's taking the DCU in the opposite direction of ehere the MCU is going & it's ultimately a much more satisfying experience.
