That's really interesting, cos I think when the Simpsons was at its best it was really good at subverting that idea. Like that episode where Homer is hired by his brother to design a car that appeals to the working man, but it's a disaster because Homer doesn't know anything about designing cars.

It's like we've been trained by pop culture to equate disruptive vulgarity with working class authenticity, so when people like Farage or Johnson or Trump come along we all think we're hearing the voice of the people instead of some posho acting the prick.

...except of course that the vulgar oafs at the centre of all these stories had big hearts & cared about people. That bit has been conveniently forgotten.
