Hey it seems like ten million years since Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina but unsurprisingly, folks there are still struggling. That especially includes marginalized southerners like the ones here, so lend a hand if you can.
Like many in our city, the Blade has struggled in Helene's ongoing aftermath. We're a local journalism co-op of working class trans people. It has not been an easy year.

Amid exhaustion, illness, poverty and trauma we've still done important work. Please help us keep doing it.
Donate to Help the Asheville Blade survive Helene's long aftermath, organized by Asheville Blade

ProPublica spoke to about 150 people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.”

We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words.

Buddy of mine said the reason College Football is such an excellent product is that it's basically a melodramatic BravoTV show from Monday to Friday until Saturday when they play football and they rest on Sunday and start the cycle all over again on Monday and he's right and it's a good pitch

Adults need to make the Christmas magic themselves. You want cookies and tree decorating? Start a tradition of doing so with people you love! Go to holiday events! Drive around and look at lights! Kids get magic made for them; you're grown now. It's your turn to make it.
Because you're an adult you fucking muppet. You gotta pay the magic forward.

as a grantwriter, the lack of unrestricted funding is a MASSIVE burden on nonprofits. everyone wants to fund a new shiny pilot program that makes them look like innovators. they don’t want to help make your tried and tested programs that have served the community for 50 years more sustainable
The headline I feel like is that all the philanthropic donations from billionaires typically have a shitload of restrictions.

Mackenzie is like “you’re doing work to stop something horrible or to help something good? Cool. Here’s a few hundred million.” and the paper is like “wow… so novel”
Mackenzie Scott’s signature philanthropic style is giving unrestricted gifts—a rarity in the industry. trib.al/DjrurgM

The rules are simple 🌟

You must find a person who has never heard “Dominick the Donkey” and play it for them:

this is a semantic distinction that is also completely pointless, but:

while Hot Fuss is the ~greater~ album (it’s a debut, it sounded unlike anything else out there at the time), Sam’s Town is actually the ~better~ album imo (it’s more cohesive, its high points are better than Hot Fuss’s)

ah! common mistake. it should have been “we’re on to winston-salem,” as wake forest university is there, and not wake forest, n.c., which is 100-plus miles east of winston-salem

and now they’re on to the bus home
