It’s not complicated. The last NU board chair was the board chair of General Dynamics, which makes the shells for Istraeli tanks. No pro publica style investigation needed, journalists and faculty (and student speakers at the encampment!) have been screaming this for years. No one cares.
Still haven't read the full agreement because I deserve nice things occasionally. But there's really a need for a propublica-type investigation into the social network of these boards, presidents, & donors with the admin. At the same time, exploring the similarities and differences across deals.
I would love to see detailed reporting about how these deals come together. This one looks like an inside job even more than Columbia’s.

legislated medical malpractice. great job everyone.
And one more other thing I’m seeing now, that Northwestern unsurprisingly didn’t mention in its statement, effectively banning gender affirming care at NU school of medicine

It's cynical for me to say this, but Northwestern bringing back an octogenarian whose name is already plastered all over campus with the implicit ask to be the dude who signs the Big Capitulation to the current administration in exchange for a bag of magic beans seems like it was the plan all along.

Critics have claimed the recipe requires half a dozen eggs, while others have noted that only six eggs are required
How did the @nytimes.com editors let this sentence appear?

"Critics have likened Mr. Trump’s approach to extortion, while others have chalked it up as a cost of doing business with this administration."

with the current regime underwater in polling by around 30 points and faring worse by the day, NU have decided that now is the time to show them their bellies and play ball.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

Full statement from NU below:

It's notable that this comes, over the widespread opposition of their own faculty, after Trump's support has dropped like a rock and a bunch of the administration's other power grabs are losing momentum even on the legal front.

The gentry running NU are doing this because they want to.
Northwestern joins the growing list of US universities which are caving to Trump by agreeing to illegally ban trans people from facilities.

Banning trans people from bathrooms is illegal in Illinois, as affirmed by law and a court ruling.

There might be no better example of the war coming home than a CIA trained teen death squad recruit getting asylum in the US and then shooting a bunch of soldiers who were deployed to DC for no reason other than Kabuki Security Theater

It is absolutely wild to me that anyone in or around Chicago legitimately believes that Christkindlmarkt, a massive tchotchke emporium with overpriced mulled cider and glögg populated by nothing but the most holiday-pilled aunties from Big Ten country, is a security risk, requiring hundreds of cops.
The Christkindlmarkt thing is so funny top to bottom. America so starved for vibrant public spaces and events that this winter craft fair gets Disneyland-level regional demand, and this is seen as a problem to be solved with cops and security

Utrecht is one of Europe's hidden gems. A big college town that's friendly to tourists as well.
A mile of Utrecht's Amsterdamsestraatweg w 300 businesses, buses, freight & 20K bikes/day was rebuilt last year. It's so good

2.5m bike lanes on both sides of the road
1.8m sidewalks
1.4 million pavers
116 new trees
5 new plazas
new lights bus shelters & sewer lines

...58 fewer car parking spots

One of the big issues of our time is seeing 'young people cant afford homes' and 'homeowners cant afford to be taxed more' as two separate problems, rather than the inevitable consequence of an economy built around inflated house prices to placate landlords
Some sympathy for this potentially made up woman but I wonder how the poster feels about the numerous people who would love to be able to call a house their own and form relationships with their neighbours but can't because of the housing market. Does their emotional plea count for anything?
Mumsnet is already on the case.
