How to Help: Twin Cities Residents
This is a post for people in Minnesota. I’m going to do a separate post for the non-Minnesotans when I’m done with this one. (If you’re in a hurry you can go to Stand With Minneso…

it brings me joy that ICE agents regularly drive by me just waddling and grooving while patrolling and that i am an inconvenience to their plans ☺️
imaging hating me while i’m tap dancing at the traffic light to stay warm and protect my neighbors

This is what happened in our neighborhood yesterday. ICE snatched a human being off of our streets, roughed them up badly, and then pepper sprayed legal observers as they documented it all. This is a daily occurrence happening all throughout Minnesota right now.

If you live in the Cities, an easy way to help immigrant families in hiding is: laundry! Laundromats are ICE magnets, so people without washers need help.

The People’s Laundry will drop off laundry to your door to wash and dry and pick up a few days later:

Two community members stand on the street corner of Central Ave and 18th St, watching over a local business in 5° temps with a wind chill of -15°. They are patrolling the area, keeping an eye out for ICE activity, doing what they can to protect their immigrant neighbors.

With masked armed federal agents sitting at the corner and circling the St. Paul neighborhood for quite some time, about 50-100 neighbors came out to blow whistles. This man says this is his neighborhood and thanks everyone who came out.

The agents have all left.

There's no telling how many hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised to pay rent and for food and other supplies for the many people who have to shelter in place and it should not be this way but I'm proud as fuck of everyone who is helping in any way they can.

Instead of going to Target, Cub Foods, and Corporate chains please support small and locally owned grocery stores in cultural corridors.

@elliottpayne.org, @kayforparks.bsky.social, and I heard from businesses today who are barley making it by. Some are already getting eviction letters.
The solidarity between our communities in Minneapolis has never been stronger. You can help by replacing your trips at Target and do your shopping at immigrant owned businesses on our cultural corridors instead.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Two white friends tail me home if it's outside the hours when people are out and about. I'm damn near third generation Minnesotan. It's not just "you're a citizen you'll be fine." I'm a black woman alone. Who knows what they will do.
I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.
