Night Watch by Terry Pratchett

Alternatively (if possible) The Laws & Ordinances of the City of Ankh-Morpork
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

Last month, Denny's was bought out by private equity in a $620 million deal.

Now the company is closing 150 locations.

It's the latest chain to be swallowed by private equity and see numerous workers lose their jobs.

#DeckTheHalls Definitely Larkosh and Illianna, the orc duke and his estranged (but not by the end of the story) human duchess. He pushes her away because of threats on her life, because he loves her more than anything, and it takes them 10 years to find their way back to each other. But they do.

A much anticipated one!

This one is Julian the neurotic German (he's got a personality disorder) and Alexander the soft spoken Russian with the patience of a saint

Upright: migrant kid highschool sweethearts together forever

Reversed: both yearning for others but severely co-dependent

The two men Virgil has loved.

Upright: Lucifer, strong mutual feelings driven by caring choices.

Reversed: Raphael, an unrequited love. Virgil stole his first kiss when Raph was drunk. Virgil abandoned Raph to Cyrus when he planned his suicide.

As a whole, Rivals fits both upright and reversed as a book very well tbh. For characters, minor cheat, but Rotanu specifically (in Rivals)-- a lot of the conflict in the book comes from temptation of changing the past + differences in how he and Sia believe they should proceed

#DeckTheHalls 9. I'll go with Ashrah and Nitara. They start in reverse (when they aren't really lovers), their meet-cute an incredibly fierce and tense battle between them, a conflict that resumes and dominates the later chapters of EF, when it affects them with imbalance and temptation, (1/2)

You'd think Mick/Eleanor (the MCs), but actually, Miryam and Yarrow, the leader of the dragons and queen of the St. Nadia colony, respectively.

First off, they're sapphic and also a draconic gnome and elegant bee person, so Aesthetics. (1/4)

#DeckTheHalls this one fits Gore to a T. When we meet him, he's a corpo agent who's a bit of a liberal, as far as cops are concerned. Over the course of the story, he examines his job and his duties and how they line up with his conscience.

This is JUST MY OPINION

I see artists say they don't use alt text because they can't begin to describe the image

IMO *some* indication of the image is better than nothing

"this is an oil painting of a weird hairy monster sitting under a tree"

helps a user who relies on alt text to feel included

this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test"

when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter

it's diagnostic
So similarly, when we see people who prefer ChatGPT or a similar synthetic text extruding machine as a source of medical information, that means those are people who are under-served in the current system.

One of my fave niche history facts is how many loaded pistols your average highwayman had during a hold up.

We're talking four minimum on his saddle, then at least two in his belt. Ideally three or four.

Because fuck trying to reload a 17th century pistol on horseback that's why.
