She then saw where the Nether-Touched was leading them: a discreet opening at the base of a mountain—one of solid rock and not of ice like the one they had just escaped from. Half of the entrance was already barred by ice, and two razzyg were crushed under a single boulder of snow. There might be more inside; vermin for her to crush, nothing more. They hurried inside, the wind howling at their back like a predator frustrated at having failed to devour two more souls. Ashrah poised Datusha in front of her so its light would reveal any foes. Darkness extended deep into the mountain; if razzyg or other demons took shelter there, they had run away from the entrance. Keeping her sword at the ready, she turned to the devastation outside. A cyclone had formed in the distance, thousands upon thousands of sharp crystals captured in the raging storm. With some luck, it would not come their way, or they might need to venture deeper into the mountain, a prospect that brought Ashrah little enthusiasm. She trusted it would withstand the elements, but she would much rather stay close to the exit all the same. More ice accumulated in the mouth of the cavern; not long after, it completely blocked it. Better this way. Once the storm passed, Ashrah could carve their way out; for now, the barrier would act as a shield.

Before him, along the wall behind the bed facing into the inner ward of the castle, were Lady Brienne’s most beautiful gifts. The one finishing touch already in place. A set of four leaded windows she’d specially commissioned from a contact in Lys through her Tyroshi partners. These, and the ones that illuminated the front room of the solar and the great hall, had been how his lady had shown her largesse. She’d said that armor of the kind she had given Podrick would not serve a water dancer, but these windows would tell his story for ages to come.

Though the name of this city had been forgotten, the purpose of the temple was not. It had once been dedicated to Ada’atzer, the God of Wrath, who had enjoyed a large following in ages past but had become obscure in this current era of feeble softness. No doubt it was Ada’atzer’s demands for fresh blood that had eventually driven his devotees away to kinder gods. But these cultists had no interest in kinder gods. They were only interested in the Sea Mother—the true Sea Mother. Mu’u, the Goddess of Tempests and Unrelenting Terrors. She who had given birth to Atalantis, and would one day take it back into herself. Surrounding the central pedestal, eleven stone circles were carved into the marble floor, blank on the inside but circumscribed by strings of glyphs. From each circle, drainage canals stained with ancient blood ran in zigzagging paths toward the center.

Finally set down to workshop the Infernal alphabet. Some names ended up needing a tweak, but it's all good.

Now to actually design the alphabet... it will be a challenge, but I'm curious to learn how to write Ashrah's name in Infernal 🔥

How to fail bard training.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Chalmalch had not seen his like in at least a century. He was perfect material for the vocation. Perhaps too perfect. He'd reached half-bard, and then abandoned the path, a terrible waste. Moreso, it was blasphemous to be so gifted of Maledin-Iryla and disdain to dedicate that gift to their service. Why? Fear of unworthiness? Arrogance? Or something else? Rushak's mind was not easy to steer along the narrow, convoluted trails of orthodoxy. The majority of Chalmalch's Acolytes followed those trails without doubt. And Rushak—How had he failed to place that ill-fitting name with that unforgettable face? The tortuous questions framed by thin lips, the perilous thoughts nearly voiced, and in the end locked away for another time and place. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

#Bookvember 29. At the top of my TBR is Woodspell by @crcollins.bsky.social and a bunch of Ao3 stories I have opened in the browser. My Marvel Unlimited subscription ends on the 1st, so no more comics for me for a while.

“I may have to just do the translating at the meeting,” I conclude. “Why is that?” Rondu asks, and he sounds keenly interested in what I’ll reply by the way he focused in on me specifically. “Well, they don’t have these translation nanites-“ “Molecsynths,” Driona supplies helpfully. “Yeah, those, since they don’t have them, they’re not going to understand anything you say, even if you do them. Someone’s going to have to do the talky-understandy bits between us. Seems like it should be me,” I say confidently, and I feel a lot more secure in that I’ve already determined a role for myself in all of this. “That will not be necessary. I’ve been dedicating a portion of my computing capabilities to learning your language, English, and I can make a device that will suffice in translation for Driona at the meeting,” Rondu says, also matching Driona’s helpful tone. For some reason this causes an irrational wave of irritation to wash through me. “Well… fine! As long as we’re not demanding stabbing them in the head to inject those things then and there. That would send a very bad message!” “Yes, I thought the same,” Driona comments.

I can see it in your eyes.” “Maksim, I don’t really…” “Relax, Ray. I won’t ask what it is, yet. You and James will keep your secrets as long as you have to. You always do. But if there is something I can do to help, say the word.” I swallowed hard. Maksim was a good agent. Smart, dedicated, cool under pressure. And he was scared now. He needed me to have a plan because he needed someone to have a plan. So, no pressure, then. But maybe it would be better for morale if I didn’t dissuade him. “There is something I need to know.” I considered my wording carefully. It would make him feel better to think I had something planned, unless he realized that said plan was insane. That would only make things worse.

If he keeps his calm, he has… not terrible chances,” she conceded. “I still put my gold on Bi-Han, though.” Shang Tsung hummed. “What would throw such a disciplined monk like Liu Kang off balance, I wonder?” “Oh, I know just the thing. Make Kitana tell him our mother arranged a marriage for her, and he’ll forget his own name!” She laughed as she pictured the scene. Shang Tsung’s control over souls allowed him to shapeshift, though he rarely used his magic anymore, and certainly not those more mischievous applications, preferring to dedicate himself to chemistry. A prank would be the perfect time to dust off his abilities—or maybe Mileena could try doing it herself. Heh. She could already imagine Shang’s lecture if she even suggested that.

When people look at a character that has a collection of plot holes, a bunch of meaningless ideas thrown in to give the illusion of depth, and a shred of personality that still manages to contradict itself, and call that "amazing"... well, suffice to say it's a relief to have left that fandom.

The center of Devon was an open space marked by a large stone fountain built. No water flowed from it, and like the gate doors, it was defaced with crude graffiti. Its base had become a bin filled with broken bottles and other assorted trash. Although an open area, it felt cramped. The skyline of the city loomed all around, and despite traditionally being squares, Devon’s center—Vega Plaza, according to Captain Vance—was more of a zigzag.

Comment on Ao3 by GarmStoylen: Oh, this is such an interesting setting! I do love how the singular person in the entire fic that cares about Milena's demon-mouth is... herself. Oh, I am sure she has had a massive amount of terrible experiences with it - something like her feelings here doesn't grow from no-where - but when you are the princess and your maid freely jokes about your humor in the morning, you are probably doing something right. It would not surprise me at all if a story revealed that Mileena was very popular among the people. Of course, it would also be entirely in keeping that if they ever *saw* her mouth, a lot of people, even those who knew it was there, would panic and react very badly. Her first meeting with the ambassador is really very cute - and then that travel to the temple. That temple is *immensely* cool. I love gods of spiritual purity presented as *good* rather than harsh, and this is clearly an in-universe different directio for Mileena - and I note that despite all her protests, Mileena *can* produce a flower as good as any other. Poor Mileena, I felt her panic at being invited to dinner. She'd have to remove the veil to eat, after all. Oh, Mileena is down bad. That flight is fun, but just "yeah, I can't deliver this thing that reminds me of her *now*"... Sure, Mileena, you're not protesting too hard at all. And that scene where she was told she could keep it was *super* cute! And then, of course, we run into the problem. I wonder if the Ambassador genuinely did not know, or just underestimated how much her demon-blood bothered Mileena? That is so sad... and then she has to actually get trapped up on a floating island for the ambassador to talk to her. Again, that is super cute, though. Her *accidentally licking* Tanya is hysterical... and Tanya *liking it* was even better. Fine work :)
