Mages are the only military other than ceremonial door guards in Boscari. They protect everyone, altho not necessarily from themselves. They kick ass with swords; their gifts make them stronger and faster and more perceptive, but magic itself isn't something they can weild against other people

It was pretty standard that he dwell on thoughts like this of an evening, when he had a bit of privacy. When his need to curse and growl and flex his hands into fists would be mercifully hidden from anyone but him. Bad enough he made his guy miserable by not loving him enough or ever saying the right thing; he couldn’t stand to know he had ever given the man cause to fear him. Because it was a habit of long standing, he had no need to watch his feet or scrutinize his environment. He’d wandered this zigzag route about the farmyard relentlessly for the last decade. Ever since they built the place. So it was a while before he noticed anything was different. He had swung around and faced the house, and he lurched to a halt when it sank in that the shutters had a touch of color to them. He frowned. They had built this place together, nothing about it should come as a surprise. He hadn’t ever been gone long enough for anything about it to become unfamiliar. Their closest neighbors were a mile away and only had them over for dinner a couple times a year; he sometimes walked down to Marinz, the nearest town, to buy the few items they couldn’t make themselves and hear the news. The walk took a day, and he always came right home again.

Had to go all the way back to Bull to find one! (this is from the epilogue, from a character who doesn't have a narrative)
She rested both hands on the top of her head and released a shaky breath. There was a part of her that felt relief and not frustration; he had escaped. Him and Dameth both, perhaps – no one could account for the latter’s fate – and they were the next thing to kid siblings from her perspective. She felt as if she’d had a hand in raising them and did not want to wish them ill. They were her enemies, though, and they had won a convincing victory in New Towtiel. When the secter captured Boden and tried to break him, they hadn’t understood, but she had the sense it had since been brought home to them: no one passed through torture unscathed. They had caused him pain along the way, but they were the ones who had been broken by it. The letter hadn’t said so, but it was there in the tone. The revolutionaries were disorganized, demoralized, and much less firm in their convictions than they had been. How not, when the mage who was the Darling of their secter had let them do that to him rather than be one of them?

Ramsu opened his mouth to respond, and he was back in Pathmelon beneath a hotter sun with a dry wind scraping across his skin. He felt a horrible jolt like a shock to his entire nervous system when he took in the body right in front of him, almost close enough to touch, sprawled in a puddle of blood that still had a wet sheen to it. Cursing, he scrambled to his feet. He had fleetingly forgotten about this, but here he was, returned to the middle of a massacre that was his fault. He slapped both hands on the top of his head as he turned in a circle, taking it in again. Reminding himself how awful it was and how totally he was responsible. Then he set off north at a brisk walk.

A few get mentioned but I had to reach for Tisirat because I love this moment: Sathriel is watching a major city be destroyed around him by mysterious means. Tisirat razed a city. Modern Barrachites tend to glorify the bloodthirstiness of their antecedents. The power of
“‘The children screamed and the women wailed and the men fell to their knees,’” Habera quoted, “‘as the city of Op disintegrated before the anger of Tisirat.’” Feeling as if he had been punched in the gut, he finished for her, “‘And the emperor said: you rebelled against my will, let the flames rise and the stones of your houses separate one from the next until there is nothing built by your pride left.’” “Never knew what that might look like ‘til now.” Her tone was wry, but Sathriel couldn’t share her clinical interest in this catastrophe. She had mentioned the fate of Op offhandedly, she didn’t know how right she was. But Sathriel knew what was happening now, and so he knew that it was happening for him. There weren’t earthquakes in this part of the world, but there was something else here, Habera had brought it within the walls herself. As they started down the stairs to the street, he told her, “Please remember this moment. Promise me.” “I’m not likely to forget.” She glanced at him sidelong, and all humor left her. “I promise.”
