This bit rankles me. Calling it "morale-sapping" and suggesting any jury trial is a deliberate provocation of the justice system, when in reality it's a legal right, and the only way defendants have to prove their innocence.
Judges at Wood Green who spoke to Sackman described it as “morale-sapping” to see defendants opt for jury trials in the hope of collapsing their cases. “They are coming into court and laughing in the face of the justices, knowing they can go back out on the streets and commit further offences,” she said.

Sackman suggests this is about a fear of change, but she raises the valid point that being in a state of perpetual limbo, without closure on such a horrific matter, is causing witnesses to pull out of trials due to stress.
Sackman said she understood why people “fear change” to the justice system. “Behind these 80,000 odd cases that are waiting in the backlog, there are individual stories and individual lives being put on hold behind each and every one of those cases,” she said. “No one is being served in the case that we saw. Not the accused, who’s currently being remanded in jail, not the victim who’s been waiting since she first reported her crime years ago. “I’ve spoken to victims and survivors who tell me they’ve lost their jobs, they suffered mental breakdown all the while that they were waiting. More victims and witnesses are pulling out of the process because they cannot wait that long. That is compelling illustration of justice delayed being justice denied.”

Her first point: the severe delays in sexual assault cases coming to trial. This is a direct result of the backlog, compounded by the workings of the justice system; for SA trials in particular, in almost every case the defendant is on bail.
This causes a lot of problems for scheduling.
Speaking at Wood Green crown court, Sackman said victims of severe sexual assault were routinely told it could take four years for their cases to come to court. On the morning she spoke to the Guardian, the minister watched a bail hearing for a case involving severe sexual assault, one unlikely to come to a full trial until 2028. Some of the offences in the case, including strangulation, beating and nonconsensual sexual images, took place as far back as 2020.

Ham clapped a hand on her shoulder and offered her a hot, black coffee. ‘Morning Captain!’ he said jovially. ‘Thought I’d wake you early – there’s a bunch of papers need signing already, and that’s not the half of it!’ ‘Geez, Ham, the sun’s not even risen!’ Maira groaned. She rubbed her eyes and looked around; she was still in the helm. ‘You let me sleep here all night?’ she asked. Ham shrugged. ‘I follow the captain’s orders, Captain,’ he said and flashed her a grin. ‘I’ll see you in your office in ten minutes.’ ‘Thirty,’ Maira argued. She got to her feet, feeling the tension in her muscles as she stretched. ‘I’m not signing anything until I’m changed.’ The light was barely creeping over the horizon, judging by the golden glow rising in the clouds, as Maira made her way over the short walkway to the captain’s quarters. As she did so, she happened to glance towards Bolthead. There were a dozen or more people at the gates of Ham’s yard, staring at the Fallen Star.

Maira chuckled too, then pulled a chair up and sat, suddenly serious. ‘Argyle,’ she said. ‘Who’s been through my bag while I’ve been gone?’ Argyle started. He took off his reading glasses and packed them away carefully. ‘I can tell you no one has looked in your bag while I have been in here,’ he said. Maira nodded, seemingly satisfied. As he clicked open his glasses case, she said, ‘and when did you leave the room whilst I was at the junkyard with Ham?’ The glasses case clicked closed. ‘Well I couldn’t say exactly what time-’ ‘Argyle.’ Maira leaned forward, folding her hands on the desk, ‘Between my leaving this room after the will reading, and my returning to it just now, how many times were you out of this room? And who was in the room on those occasions when you left?’ Argyle sweated like a guilty witness. He grimaced and groaned, and eventually said, ‘I was out of the room twice. Once was to go to the bathroom, and once was to fetch some paperwork your mother left in the office. Both times she was in the room when I left – the first time with some aunt or another, I don’t remember.’

Just dig your patch and block it out.’ I stared back into those eyes, so filled with fear, and I wondered what could have engendered such emotion in Chief. And then I felt hands grasping my shoulders, and I was hauled to the bank in the arms of two guards. Two more joined them, and one of them socked me in the jaw as the other yelled, ‘What the Hell do you think you’re doing, prisoner?’ The guard drove a fist into my gut and I doubled over instinctively; before I could receive more punishment there was a cacophony of alarm and I was dropped unceremoniously into the snow once more.

With that crunch came sound: I realised that the background noise I had been ignoring was the creak and crack of the ice river as it froze and settled further down the path – where I could not say, for it all seemed to be frozen, up and down, but some force moved it and sent pings and cracks echoing and rippling across the soundscape. These were joined by the sounds of the trees – not the wind whistling through them, but the creak and groan as they turned to follow my progress, bending down to touch my shoulders and brush a branch across my face – and, when I turned suddenly to stare in horror and wonder at this action, twanging back into their straightened pillars of frozen wood. Each tree was covered by a thin rime of ice which crackled and whispered as it dusted me with frozen particulate upon their strange contortions. The journey – I followed the trail of the river, for it was the only thing in this landscape to follow – was thus scored by a thousand staccato rattles and pops, and I marched to the erratic snare of a haunted drummer.

There was no smell here, just the fresh cold of winter which burned my nostrils dry; I pulled my jumper over my nose and breathed through my mouth to restore some life into it, through what little warmth and moisture that provided. Here the very air seemed dead, sounds travelled infinitely and even the quietest tread of a creature in the underbrush sounded like a breath in my ear from some phantom just behind me.
