The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

I don't normally feel this way, but I have a feeling that the real-estate industry really should be disrupted and replaced by a few large-scale intermediaries—the way travel agents were—for many reasons, among them this one.

As someone who works in the tech industry--absolutely.

They are testing the waters. These are top-down orders. The ONLY way to stop it is a visceral negative reaction. Write articles. Post your rage. Email. Post. @. All those things.

Only you have the power to kill it.
Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from.

tl;dr: Only CEOs want this. Tell them how much you hate it. Be loud, email, call, @, post. You will kill this.

🧵⬇️
The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

Years ago, my colleagues at Business Insider and I tracked YouTuber “cancellation” arcs. What we found is that for many entertainers, “cancellation” actually sets the stage for a redemption arc, one that can raise their profile higher than ever. It wasn’t career-ending. It was fuel.

This is the number one issue I find with junior game designers (and unfortunately, non-designers who think anyone can design). So many people cannot tell the difference between "a game I like" and "a game that's designed well" and they get REAL mad if you point out there's a difference
begging people to learn to separate “i like it” with “it’s good.”

i like some things that are objectively crap. you can admit that you do too. it’s fine

I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

I really liked the new Wicked movie. The added song wasn't exactly my jam, and I kept getting distracted by the extremely underweight actors but there were some really bang-on moments in the cinematography and choreography. I will continue to die on the hill that Jeff Goldblum isn't my favorite Oz.

imagine Shakespeare just hadn't written King John or Merry Wives of Windsor or something because it wouldn't have been "the best of all time". The world would be poorer for it.

Be critical of the artistry behind things without demeaning your own thoughts such that they must reduce to a number.
stack ranking art or media is missing the point imo

Yes, HID headlights are very bright but the bigger problem is the proliferation of gargantuan vehicles with 5’+ hood heights so that if you’re driving a normal sized car their headlights are at your eye level rather than seat level like they’re supposed to be.

Home Alone makes changes to the Die Hard formula that render it hard for me to enjoy. The McClain character should feel overawed. And in theory having Kevin be a child versus adults achieves that. But the thing is: Kevin is a god. It's not just Tom & Jerry. This is some random punks versus Anansi.

The historical present can be understood as a riffling of ideas too creative to appear in fiction with ideas too stupid to appear in fiction
I'm not surprised TOO often anymore about all the roleplay-text induced weirdnesses in LLM outputs, but the fact that poetry can be used to defeat prohibitions and produce nuclear weapon-making instructions is pretty odd/hilarious. Yet more kindling for the "magical incantations" camp
