hypocrisy is when you lay claim to a belief but your actions belie that you don't really believe it. There's a similar phenomenon whereby you gesture to a commonly held belief to invoke a response from the audience, even as you yourself don't hold the belief. Does that have a name of its own?

think I'm starting Control today. Kinda wanted my next game to be Star Wars Outlaws as I've heard it's quite a bit better than maybe average public opinion says, but I want to do that one on PS5 and I'm away from home, so... Control? Rimworld? ...more Caves of Qud? decisions...
