The Indie website is a horrible experience and all the better for being paywalled.

Unrelated, wondering if the members of the motorcycle club mentioned in the review take LSD.
When I was young, the Independent was the best designed newspaper on the stands. This is what it looks like now: a par of text sandwiched between two ads, an auto-play video and a pointless and intrusive swipe function. It's as if it hates the work of its own writers.

I'm not instinctively in favour of removing the right to trial by jury, but what is the evidence? Do France and Germany (where it is not the norm) have worse outcomes? More miscarriages of justice?
🚨Trial by jury is a cornerstone of our democracy and an essential safeguard against authoritarianism. We must come together - cross party - to stop any attempt by the government to undermine this fundamental freedom

A film of Tank Girl! With Lori Petty! I was so excited to see this. And then so disappointed.

I love this play, but was hugely disappointed the only time I saw it performed. They tried to play the serious Hamlet scenes for laughs. Ruined it.
The - very enjoyable - film version of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern was on Prime recently so go check if it’s still there if you’ve got a subscription. Imagine Tim Roth and Gary Oldman as Laurel and Hardy trapped in a Beckettian farce in the middle of Hamlet. A great great film of a great great play

Okay, here we go.

Health & care staff are no longer allowed a Covid booster, but they're still expected to look after COVID+ patients.

NHS/govt is reneging on its duty of care. Staff will become unwell, and patients too will suffer.

You know what to do

The Amazon Wish List sends any purchases directly to the Giving Back Rochdale appeal, meaning that needy kids in the area get at least one present to open at Christmas.

Learning from the findings of an enquiry? Unlikely. Acting on them? Impossible. That's not what enquiries are for, they're to be seen to be doing something without actually doing anything.

Winning elections is a means not an end. Stop fighting the next election the minute you win an election. Use your term to do things you believe in, and make the case for them. Even if you then lose the next election you will still have achieved something. And who knows, maybe it’ll be popular?

At some point you have to think that there is so much wrong with what someone says that it has to be intentional; and that the only proper counterargument involves a stout piece of wood.
