I rewatched 1987’s “Baby Boom” in the wake of Diane Keaton’s passing and a thing that’s so consistent when you watch even middlebrow stuff from the 80s and 90s is that it plays like a masterpiece compared to so much of what gets made today because the scripts and exiting are TIGHT

Even tho this is about L&O, it hits so many of my issues with many new shows (and big budget movies) lately. So many of them feel like they exist entirely on a sound stage. The scripts are bland, the costuming is flat, the lighting is static. Derivative is de riguer.

The reboot of “Law & Order” is a Temu version of the show

The original (the first 20 seasons!) stands the test of time, whereas the reboot plays like a cheap knockoff relying on empty tension to fill in the gaps. A tremendous bummer!

My newsletter this week is an in-depth compare & contrast
Why is the reboot of “Law & Order” so bad?
It’s as if everyone forgot how to make the show.

the disastrous refusal of the self-styled silicon valley technokings to keep anyone in their lives capable of questioning their increasingly incomprehensible politics has lead to a crisis of thinking so severe that a fifty-eight year old man believes something is important because he knows about it

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

Mr.Beast is the closest thing to the real world version of an SCP article about something that looks almost human but isn't quite, and if you fail to observe the ritual(do not engage with Mr.Beast), you'll lose your clavicle or something.

I did this, took like 30 min.
Points I kept hammering: domestic cloud, regulations around copyright and likeness rights, focusing on machine learning with concrete, real world uses (creating new drugs, etc), the damage done by slop, the need to listen to AI experts who are realists, not boosters.

"well what are the Democrats supposed to do" I don't know! They're supposed to know! I'm not the one who sought and obtained a political position that would require me to know what to do when the ruling party attempts to install the President as a dictator!

Was gonna watch a YouTube video called "Anchors don't work the way you think," but then I realized I'm happier in my ignorance than I'd ever be if I knew the truth.

Also, most people are not gonna fill out something like this, so it's a chance to have an out-sized influence.
I'm not just an angry, anti-slop rando, I'm an anti-slop rando who demographically represents tens or even hundreds of thousands of people.

From what I understand, consultations like this one go on the record and even if the government ignores them (which, in this case, they almost certainly will), they can still be used to embarrass them and point out that they're not doing what the public they claim to represent wants.
