Key takeaway of 2025: Bluesky is an enormous activism force that punches above its weight. The paypros censorship stuff? This site is the one that’s getting us to the 20 yard line. The initial interest in the summer hasn’t returned to Twitter, whereas Bluesky is now the de facto source on this issue

Sort of a related tangent, I've noticed a thing that tends to happen with tropes conventions:

- Thing happens
- Thing keeps happening, becomes trope
- Trope is overused
- Media subverts trope
- Subversion becomes so popular it's difficult to find the trope played straight
there's like... two layers of any given concept

there's "what the thing is" and then there's "the surface stuff"

take a 'western,' right? some people will be like:

1) cowboy
2) this town is too small for you and i, so one of us will have to leave and/or die
3) bandits
4) gunfights

but does it?

I got so stoned at a Mets game once I compared the Jumbotron to the top screen of a Nintendo DS bc it had “a bunch of useful contextual information” and the field to the bottom screen bc “it’s where the game is actually played”

Alright! Let's actually talk about this waterfall thing. It is an amazing showcase of many things that I adore from late 90s/early 2000s graphics.
I am replicating this in Blender through mere observation, so some things might not be fully accurate to the mind-boggling effects of the PS1.

AI works* like "I have a friend who knows how to do that, I'll ask her"

you still don't know how

if the friend isn't there, you still can't do it

you won't learn how. why would you, your friend can do it

(ps you have to pay your friend, the cost will go way up it's run at a loss)

*when it works
glad to see pushback

learning and skill growth happen when what we knew going into a problem weren't enough to answer and move on. AI flatters you to feel you know enough to get an answer out (often not right, but even if it were!), user doesn't have to become more capable, becomes dependent on it.
‘Study after study shows that students want to develop these critical thinking skills, are not lazy, and large numbers of them would be in favor of banning ChatGPT and similar tools in universities’, says @olivia.science www.ru.nl/en/research/...

So in Arc Raiders there is a door glitch. You don't need to know what it is, just that the gamers are brainstorming all the "easy" ways to "fix" the doors and it's simultaneously hilarious and horrifying. My two favorite solutions are "add a kill volume" and "put a second door behind the door".

Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.
