"To be a Republican in 2025 represents a clear public confession that you either don't know the difference between good and evil and you're so morally empty that you can't be bothered to begin to try, or that you do know the difference, and you prefer evil." Great essay from @juliusgoat.bsky.social
The Crime of Human Virtue
Sometimes it really is as simple as good vs. evil. This is one of those times. Human virtue is our great crime against the fascist project; it's also our great weapon against it.

The answer is: shop local, give everyone living wages, buy less stuff, especially clothes, support thrifting, a circular economy, *and* buy quality goods made ethically (that will last). Overall cost is the same (or less) and it's better for people & planet.

Consumerism is the problem.

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap
HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "I'm willing to pay more for quality products if they are made in America, by Americans, who are paid a decent income." The tweet shows Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" painting, which is often used to show the tweeter is expressing a brave opinion. HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "MINIMUM WAGE JOBS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE A CAREER. Why does no one understand this? Entry level jobs are STEPPING STONES to better jobs. No one wants to work towards that though." HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "Buy $5 gloves instead of $50 ones. Trust me." The tweet shows a box of "Gorilla Grip" gloves. The label on Gorilla Grip gloves show they're made in China.

I similarly stayed away from open source after bad early experiences but it's vastly improved at the same time that the tech corps have spent a decade+ enshittifying all their stuff. And now the tech billionaires and their AI are destroying everything. & Now I'm far more aware of the climate costs

History gives us plenty of examples of disease used as a weapon. There are fewer cases of governments deliberately using disease against their own citizens. We are living (or dying) through one right now.

I just want politicians to understand if you want the United States to still meaningfully exist in the future. That they are going to have to spend the bulk of the 2030s DeNazifying the American state and it’s going to be a generational project

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by ICE in Everett and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

I already like Joplin although it's going to be painful to convert (MS's fault). The main thing is every time I get out of the tech company's grasp and go open source, I'm happier and the thing doesn't degrade, it gets *better* (I went LibreOffice about 18mos ago and never looked back)

ICE in Chicago detained two people (that we know of) for filming them today, a cyclist and a neighborhood rapid responder. This in addition to tear gassing another neighborhood and brandishing weapons at rapid response—both things that have also already been going on for weeks.

I'm more determined than ever to get away from all the tech corps that keep enshittifying everything. It'll have to be one thing at a time because I have other stuff to do, but today it's moving from OneNote to Joplin (and Joplin Cloud).

Someday I'm gonna do NextCloud and host my own cloud files.
susankayequinn.bsky.social
It's gone from the File menu for me because I'm using an older version of the app... which I did intentionally because Microsoft kept taking away the features that I liked (particularly nesting).

Despite MS making it hard to move, I'm GONE. Moving all my stuff to Joplin.

After a couple hours of fruitlessly discovering the Microsoft has disabled OneNote export precisely because they don't want people leaving...only reaffirms why I need to get out of Microsoft products entirely
