fuck it we're going back into our coping cup
A close up picture of an orange mouse curled up on her side, sleeping. Her tail is curled up around her, covering her nose. She's slightly backed into a tiny clear plastic cup, and the substrate is pale yellow aspen shavings. There's a smudge of reflections throughout the picture, due to the ridiculous amount of glass and plastic tanks in the room.

tomorrow I’m visiting my beloved colleague in creative writing’s class to discuss my Chronicle article on mental illness in the academy, which she assigned. I just reread it to prepare & cried—my sources & I were so brave.

here’s a version w/o the paywall:

“Academics Don’t Talk About Our Mental Illnesses”
In the spring of 2019, I won the lottery. I was offered a tenure-track job in English literature. Then, almost immediately, I stumbled into a depressive episode so acute I don’t remember much of my fi...

I think if you DM her you'll get a faster response, but it also sounds like transportation isn't a huge issue within PA (based on her other posts)

Windows 10 goes out of support today. My fave useless fact about w10 is that the iconic blue desktop background is a *photograph* - not CGI.

Tiny 'making of' vid here - youtu.be/_2RacX9DgWM...
Three images showing photographers in a studio, standing around a black curtained area with a projector and a 'Windows' logo etched onto a glass pane. The lower image shows a version of the iconic blue windows background, with blue lasers outlining and passing through an angled Windows logos against a dark background.

PA people look at these adoptable shenanigans <3

I finally trapped these two handsome devils today. They’re getting neutered tomorrow & first shots. Maybe a miracle will happen and someone will adopt them but I’ve been begging all my cat friends with no luck.

Yellow fever, dengue, and malaria used to be endemic to river valleys and the southeastern US. That was back in the day before we had decorative man made ponds in gated subdivisions and stagnant puddles from lawn irrigation everywhere. They'd be much more widespread now.

New York health officials have confirmed the first locally transmitted case of the chikungunya virus which causes high fever, joint pain and fatigue.

It’s usually a tropical virus, but there are now infected mosquitoes spreading in New York. (NYT)

🧵It has been clear for years that a key difference between past instances of book banning and the present censorship cataclysm is that the banning happening now targets not only books, but librarianship as a profession and libraries as an institution. 1/4

Here is your Wednesday Weevil, Watching Warily. Seen at night in a Costa Rican rainforest. Love the giant eyes on this little nugget of a beetle. 🐙🌿 🕶️
A macro photo of a mottled, brownish-orange weevil atop a moss and lichen covered, tattered green leaf. The weevil is seen from a front 3/4 angle; it has a long, backward curved snout and very large, black compound eyes that take up virtually its whole head.

Another installment of: Rachel is cleaning and rediscovering caches of books in her burrow 📚🐍🌿
A picture of a book with the title: "Underexploited Tropical Plants with Promising Economic Value", National Academy of Sciences. There are nine illustrations of various leaves, fruits, and spices in a 3x3 grid. It's all in olive green/tan, slate blue, and black. It was published in 1975. A picture of a book cover "Snakes And Snake Hunting" by Carl Kauffeld, Curator of Reptiles, Staten Island Zoo. "A noted snake hunter tells of the many snakes of the United States, including over forty venomous forms, and his own adventures in capturing them alive." The cover is tan and red, with text in white and yellow. In the middle is a sepia-toned picture of a rattlesnake in a defensive position. Published in 1957. A picture of a very very worn out book that was originally a slate/grey-blue but is faded and eaten away at the corners. It's called "Our Pets: Book 1 Science Readers" wiht a very simple illustration of a variety of domesticated animals (chickens, ducks, rabbit, squirrel, and a cat). It was published in 1928. A picture of a book called "Ships That Pass in the Night," the cover yellowish-tan with navy text and starbursts scattered around the title. It is lovingly worn, rather than a neglectful type of worn. There's a rope illustration around the border, and an additional block of text near the bottom that reads: "Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing, only a lock and a voice, then darkness again and a silence." Published in 1894.

I think we can safely assume this razor clam is shredded from all that exercise shredding (and playing saxophone). Day 12 #inktober #invertober2025 #SpacetoberChallenge #OC_tober catchup
A small and simple pen on paper drawing of a clam riding a skateboard and playing a saxophone under a partial solar eclipse. The prompts are written on the right right of the drawing: shredded, Pacific razor clam, eclipse, playing an instrument.

When we write or draw porn or erotica, we get banned from having a bank account and our livelihoods get seized even if we give it away for free.

When billionaires steal what we've written or drawn to churn out a slop-approximate of porn, they're allowed to charge for it.

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

This is disturbing and creepy for so many reasons, but it’s also bizarre how much of a push there is for people to ignore listening to their own bodies and instead outsource those decisions to flawed technology.
