I visited a secondhand Tokyo bookstore just to see what it looks like... And then I stumbled on two bookshelves filled with English-language books! 🤓

They're in like-new condition, and the topics are pretty eclectic. 🙃 Many have been marked down to 220 yen! ($1.42) So anyway, I bought 3. 😅

Tokyo is soooo cool. 🙂 So much to see, the zoo allegedly has pandas, and there are wayyy more museums than I can visit. 💖

Also, being a total weeb here 🤓 but the brass 5-yen coins are beautiful...

My friend's alarm clock is the daily Bloomberg News update. Y'all, it's full of shameless pro-AI propaganda. It stoops so low as to play on people's fears for their children's future. 😱

The normies (and white-collar folks) get this brainwashing daily - that won't stop till the bubble pops...

This was probably the most impressive thing I saw during my first full day in Japan. :) Civilisation, eh.

With every mistake we must surely be learning... 🤡
Tangentially, there's a surely a paper to be written on the ways interpretations of Rapa Nui reflect the wider concerns/world views of the years/decades when they're published. Which is a widespread phenomenon, obviously, but I feel this would be a particularly clear example.

Computer, please summarize everything PG Wodehouse ever wrote in ten seconds
rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"

I've never encountered more students who say they hate reading. Students who want to be teachers, writers, or both. I wonder if "hate" means "I have trouble reading," but I also talk with so many students who write in a genre but refuse to read in it. They can't see themselves in relation to others.

Japan, I am in you! 😀 Those 12-hour flights... Oof. 🫠

Already interacted with one of the famous Japanese vending machines - passably good warm coffee for $1. :)

Benedict Arnold and Robert E. Lee were both duty-free. 😉

Just made it past the last checkpoint: I'm flying to Tokyo, woooo! 🥳

My original plan for this winter was to travel South America, but when the universe sends you an invitation, you gotta take it. 😀 I'll stay at a friend's place while exploring Japan for a couple of months. Life is good. 😌

I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

Good news: California's businesses have a great life-work balance! 💖

Bad news: I'd scheduled my very long layover for Thanksgiving, which means Walmart, In'N'Out, *and* the LA city buses are all shut down today. 🫠

Gonna take a little hike to the nearest Denny's and then back to the airport. 😅

Prose poetry is an interesting genre... This one has been on my mind for quite a while now. 😌

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Finally watching Casablanca... Ilsa referred to Sam as "boy" the moment she saw him. 😱

Another rotten classic...

Feral Artist Nomad odyssey, part 5: the Ecuador Acquiescence
The plan went kind of sideways. And upside down and inside out, but fun the entire time – and that’s what matters. The flight to Quito got delayed more and more, to the point where my c…

The very first story I ever sold ("How to Prepare for Time Travelers in the Workplace") was printed in an anthology. A Goodreads reviewer specifically mentioned my story and said it reminded them of Douglas Adams. 💖

I'm still riding that high. :)
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

Ecuador. Quito. Airport. Duty-free store. They misunderstood the assignment. *A lot*. 🤣

The prices are higher than, say, at Walmart. The funniest deal is 5 boxes of wine for $160. Sure, amigo, let's turn this plane into a party plane.
