Just a reminder that the Maine primary is seven months away, there are eight other Democrats running in the primary, and filing hasn't closed. Plenty of time to review the platforms of people running, encourage someone you like to run, and/or run yourself.

People catastrophizing about a precedent where no one can mark anything down anymore for being wrong when the real precedent is trans people not being able to do literally any job without an army of bigots launching a harassment campaign against their employer.
a lot of people debating the merits of that dogshit essay meanwhile the girl’s mom is retweeting demands to ban all trans people from teaching at any level. it’s forest for the trees shit

I don't think electing Republicans to the Senate because we decline to support guys who agree with us on 50-80% of stuff is worth losing for because they're independents, when we routinely support guys like this who are labeled Democrats.

Like the difference between "run Jon Tester (D)" and "run Jon Tester (I)" is not a matter of principle, actually! And frankly I think "don't run Jon Tester because he has bad views on a number of issues" is a stupid approach.

In fact, to the extent Jon Tester (I) can just run on his own brand and not force Dems to dilute their brand to make it capacious enough for Indie Tester, it requires a whole lot less principles-shedding.

The last time we had this kind of dysfunction (the Gilded Age), we got a bunch of new parties that were competitive and then folded into the major two.

This would suggest a Van Epps +1 EV assuming a VA-like non-partisan split
"Last Day of Campaigning the TN US CD 7 Special Election, here is where early voting stands: 72,723
GOP 46% / Dem 38.5% / Non-Partisan 15.3%
18-29 6% / 30-39 10% / 40-49 11.2% / 50-64 27.2% / 65+ 44.8% "

Republicans who try to make elections all about trans rights have a very poor track record

voters, even those who don't have great opinions about kids sports, think either it's weird they're focusing on this so much or get reminded they have mostly tolerant opinions when they're bombarded with hate

I have no doubt that the essay fuckers see going after a trans person as a huge bonus but (thus far) I've not seen any prima facie reason to believe it's a wouldn't-happen-but-for situation.

really enjoyed this piece from @quinnae.com, digging in to how much elites convinced themselves transphobia was a winner, even as ordinary americans demonstrably just don't care that much--and what that means for dem strategy going forward

nah, he's right

i see the NYT faction (as a distinct group of people from "the Dems", with tentacles influencing both parties because their aesthetic moderation is like catnip to Pre-MAGA Politicians) as a bigger long-term threat than the floundering self-destructing fascists speedrunning backlash
"I think we should beat the fascists"

"So we'll be voting for Dems?"

"I guess, though if I know those stupid feckless worthless Dems they'll just hand control back in 4 years to more fascists"

"Hm. Guess I won't vote then."

"Exactly. My job here is done. Those fascists sure will be sorry now!"

Forgot about the South Dakota State Representative who switched from the Democrats to the Republicans and cited a bill signed by FDR back in 1934 as part of her reasoning.

Really just grasping for straws at that point lol

weakening the republican congressional caucus with a handful of independents is good, but if they're the swing vote its manchin 2. preferable to a GOP of course, but it doesnt get around the need to elect progressive majorities. i dislike how this framing so often presents that as impossible

Broke: those poor masses, clinging to their opiate
Bespoke: YEAH YOU FUCKIN MASSES, YOU LOVE THAT OPIATE RIGHT
This is like Obama’s “clinging to guns and religion” comment, only far more cynical and insulting. Trump’s thinking here goes like this “I know you rubes love your churches and country music so yeah, vote for my guy, he likes that shit too, and that lady wants to take it from you.”
