The fact that protests now feature people who don’t normally have to worry about what might happen to them in an adverse encounter with security forces is a HUGE DEAL.

It means that the “real” victims don’t have to suffer alone. It means that some people care about something more than themselves

Religious movements are *always* internally contested. It is not for historians/outsiders to decide which party to the contestation represents the “true“ version or deserves exclusive use of the movement’s name/label. Their job is rather to describe the internal diversity as accurately as possible.

i get kind of annoyed that the political compass has caused a lot of people to view liberalism, conservatism, etc as a gradient that you can move “four left and two up” instead of as a series of distinct political philosophies with their own unique assumptions about the world and its ideal state
