When people loudly proclaim that anyone who speaks ill of Democratic electeds are trying to divide the party, this is the kind of fascism they allow to expand for the sake of 'midterm unity.'

Later in the week, the Senate will vote on a pair of resolutions to end the national emergency that declared duties on items imported from Canada and Brazil. The bill to end appropriation shutdowns (S 2806), sponsored by Ron Johnson (R-WI), will also get a second vote.

I'd absolutely agree with that. The dude is wildly interesting, has the opportunity to inspire so much hope, but one of the darkest people I ever had to research during the podcast's tenure.

Just wanted to highlight this thread because there is a really good discussion here on the dark side of Huey Long.

Both also used their positions to expand who they can hire and fire. Long extended his reach to cops, firefighters, and teachers. Long didn't break the law to help people. Just like the corrupt governors before him, he broke the law to help himself.

I get that, but it the parallels between how Trump governs and how Long governed are haunting. Both mass fired government employees only to replace them with people who contributed to his campaign. Both punished cities for not bowing to their whims. Both used their position to amass personal wealth.

That said, finding someone pure of message and heart in American politics is near impossible. The closest we ever got was Eugene Debs and even he had the issue of not standing strong against the more vocal and racist members of his party and unions.

There is a huge difference between being imperfect and a dictator. I don't think a man who once said when opponents told him he was breaking the law that "I'm the Constitution around here now" is an imperfect person. He's just a proto-Trump that started from the left instead of the right.

I'm not trying to shame or anything, Long is one of the most complicated figures in American politics. The songs written about him ignore the fact that he surrounded himself with a Christian nationalist & a fascism loving priest.

If Long became president, the best guess is to look at the three people he surrounded himself with. Specifically, the man Long named to lead the Share Our Wealth movement, Gerald LK Smith, who was one America's first Christian nationalists.

I get that his message of every man a king is incredibly inspiring, but after reading about the man, I have heavy doubts that he actually believed anything he said. He wanted to rule and showed as governor he was going to repeatedly break the law to get his way.
