A fan favorite Thanksgiving story from the Library: In 1926, Mississippi supporters of President Coolidge sent him a raccoon to kill & serve for Thanksgiving dinner. The Coolidges adopted her, instead.👇

What society thinks disabled people want to hear:
“You’re so brave!”
“We look past your disability!”

What disabled people actually want to hear:
“We acknowledge your disability and will happily accommodate your needs.”
“You can marry without losing your benefits.”
“We’d like to offer you the job.”

This.

Whenever local government reviews the library budget and asks, "Why should we give you money?"

We want the library to be able to say, "Because we provide a valuable service used by many people!"

Libraries are like muscles, using them more makes them stronger. 💪
Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

I would rather 50 people got benefits they didn't need than 1 went without food or shelter.
Hot take maybe but I actually don’t give a shit about benefit fraud.

I give a shit about multimillionaires and billionaires existing and not paying tax on their actual wealth.

Today I’m thinking a lot about the concepts of UBI and 4 day workweeks, and how every time one of those programs is trialed it is a resounding success, how we could so easily create a happier & more productive society, how much more we could achieve if everyone wasn’t stressed as hell all the time

There is NO FUCKING EXCUSE for this to be happening.

I had a baby die in my arms of pertussis some fifty years ago. It was a HORRIBLE death. But my fellow nurses said to me, "It's almost stamped out now, they're all getting the shots, we won't be seeing this again."

HOW THE FUCK ARE WE HERE. 😡
A third infant has died in Kentucky, KYDPH adds:

“These are Kentucky’s first pertussis deaths since 2018. None of the infants nor their mothers received the recommended pertussis vaccinations during pregnancy or early infancy.”

Healthcare for trans kids saves their lives at significant rates.

To borrow a Vonnegutism, anyone who thinks kids shouldn’t have this life saving care can take a flying fuck at a rolling donut. They can take a flying fuck at the moon.

Protect trans kids and stop persecuting them.
1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.
Study In The Journal Of Pediatrics Finds Trans Youth Care Lowers Suicidality, Few Detransition
The groundbreaking study found that suicidality dropped for transgender youth receiving hormone therapy by nearly 70%, with only 7 patients of 432 discontinuing treatment.

Stede often thinks back on that night in the top. Unfamiliar and soft leather on his skin, warm brandy on his tongue, the smell of spiced tobacco permeating every breath. It was as if the sea had risen with them when Ed's waves caught the moonlight just right. They still do.

If you are depressed about the world, can't think of something to do, go get your local library card. Get Libby or overdrive. Check out books wildly, irresponsibly. Get those libraries and authors some dosh for free.

Read this thread, especially if you've ever downloaded a book from a pirate site. Pirating indie books is NOT the same as 'acquiring' big budget Amazon shows. It's the difference between shoplifting from Walmart or stealing from a little craft stall.
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.

THIS

It saves a tremendous amount of overhead (money) and time (money) and complications (people who are eligible dropping out because they can't prove they are), but mostly it forecloses an extremely common form of fiscal parental abuse.
Periodically I see people justifying means-testing to ensure The Rich don't get stuff for free when they can afford it.

I see the logic, but we can just tax them more.

Plus, the BIGGEST thing not means-testing solves is

*deep breath*

IT STOPS RICH PEOPLE FINANCIALLY-ABUSING THEIR KIDS ANYMORE.
