So I am running the London Lea Valley 50km in March and trying to raise some money for Step Forward - a youth centre in Tower Hamlets, Kiddo attends their LGBTQIA+ group and it's been such a brilliant and supportive space for them, which feels so important when trans youth are under constant attack.

Advertising academic seminars with AI images is fucking rank and I would be offended (and devastated) if I ever found out a seminar I was giving was advertised with an AI generated image.

LNER have just sent me an email inviting me to watch their new TV advert and I cannot stress enough how absolutely stupid companies of all kinds are.

I will never voluntarily watch a TV advert. Ever. Why would you ever think I would want to just watch an ad?

Little and I have been watching some of the Olympics and she is absolutely not interested in watching any men’s sports. Just sports. By which she means women’s sports.

I am very pro this stance.

Reminder that I am fundraising to support queer and gender non-conforming kids in Tower Hamlets - which has the dubious honour of having the most children living in poverty in the UK.

The really egregious thing is how much Bristol has spent on buildings recently.

Do university administrators think that buildings teach? research? provide student support?

Academics and professional services staff *are* universities and we are being treated like an unwanted extra.
'If they choose to take up the Voluntary Severance Scheme, open to all academic staff in the School of Humanities and the School of Modern Languages, staff essentially make themselves redundant in return for a good pay-out.'

9 months' pay; 3 weeks to decide. 1/3
University of Bristol asks Humanities and Languages academic staff to voluntarily quit
Certain departments are being run into a ‘managed decline’, says Bristol UCU's co-President, as a new Voluntary Severance Scheme is announced.

3 weeks to decide, 9 months salary to choose to leave - almost certainly forever - the industry you've dedicated most of your adult life to.

With respect, I would like to know what such students would have had universities do instead, under that very specific set of unprecedented circumstances. Something that abided by the law, protected the vulnerable, and also fulfilled their consumer expectations. I’m listening.
This is emblematic of the consumer culture that fees have engendered.

What the hell did the students expect? It was a ONCE IN A CENTURY PANDEMIC. There were LAWS against congregating in public. Staff worked themselves to the bone to get online delivery working.

Students begin Covid compensation claim against 36 more universities
It comes after University College London settled a claim from students there over lost learning in the pandemic.

The thing I love the most about my sport - trail and ultra running - is that the women’s field is given the same care, attention, love, and appreciation as the men’s. I don’t know of another sport that is so egalitarian.

It genuinely makes me - a back-mid packer - feel included and represented.

I have a vivid memory of my sister’s undergrad thesis being lost, but she had just printed a hard copy and we sat around retyping the whole thing and since then I have made backups of backups of backups.
One of my PhD students ONLY had her doctoral dissertation in her laptop’s hard drive. Told her to email me the most recent version. She forgot. Her laptop was fried by the evening. She had to rewrite the entire thing.

Luckily I had some of the source/draft documents, which I sent her.
Losing our words is a writer’s worst nightmare. Don’t forget to backup your work.

Seeing as the Olympics is on I think it’s necessary to point two things out:
1. No, if you started training now you could not make the next winter Olympics.
2. (If you are a man) no, you could not just beat any female Olympian at their sport.

I wish people would stop including untranslated Greek and Latin in their work.

Aside from anything else it means I can't assign your work to students. I also don't want to have to translate everything I read, because I am usually not as invested in your topic as you are.
