That’s when Ford decided to take matters into his own hands.

“I was in my car and I said, screw this. I’m going after him. So by this time, my heart’s beating, I’m ticked off. So I go racing behind, no one can see, and I pull up behind him and I jump out of the car and I said, ‘Buddy, what’s in your bag?’ ‘Nothing’s in my bag.’ I said, ‘Buddy, I’m going to kick your ass all over the parking lot. Show me what’s in your bag.’ I did. I couldn’t help myself.”

The premier said by this point the Home Depot store manager was at the scene as well and the two of them watched and yelled profanities as the alleged thief emptied his bag.

“So he went in there, and he pulled out one of those saw blades that you open up … and the store manager said, ‘That’s what he stole!’ And then … I said, ‘Keep emptying out the baggie.’ He pulls out some cutters … and I’m by this time, I’m in a pretty rage, and I’m just in a full outrage on this guy.”

Ford said the alleged perpetrator also had some “rusty” blades in his bag.

“I said, ‘OK, those are yours, but the rest.’ And then I went on to tell him, if I ever see him in the parking lot, he’s gonna get a beating like he’s never got before. Well, that’s, that’s what you have to do.”

It is not immediately clear whether Toronto police were called about the July 19 incident.

Home Depot did not immediately return calls and emails seeking comment on Tuesday afternoon.

Ford’s office was also caught off guard by the anecdote, which the premier shared after a 36-minute speech and a 24-minute fireside chat with Mulroney.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.

Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.
