#OtD 15 Oct 1966 in Oakland, CA, the Black Panther Party for Self Defence was set up. The Party would exist, despite heavy repression, until 1982 and did things like feed breakfast to children and run community health clinics. Learn more: shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/...

"A government that claims it can’t ‘afford’ decent class sizes and yet pours $567,000,000 every year into private schools is just lying."

Here’s the government’s track record on funding education, currently Alberta public funding is $3,950 per student less than the Canadian average, and Alberta private school funding is $5,000 per student more than the average. In fact, the only reason the Canadian […]

A graph of per student funding in Alberta since 2005 in adjusted 2024 dollars.

It shows funding flat around $12,000 per student until a rise in 2016 under the NDP but then dropping precipitously from 2022, currently just over $11,000.

Meanwhile funding for private school students has steadily risen and is now only $1,500/student less than public.

Also marked are Canadian averages in both categories:
Alberta public funding is $3,950 less than the average
Alberta private funding is $5,000 more than the average

Knack isn't a great candidate but he's a damn sight better than Cartmell or Walters.

Saw a poster for Jaffer earlier with the line "Freeze the Greed" which is rich bc as mayor he's the sort who would reduce red tape by letting anyone applying for permits pay him $5K for the go-ahead on whatever.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

Korol is a US citizen. Her family hasn’t heard from her since she was taken, public charges haven’t been released—what crime did she even commit? 2nd-Degree Woodwinding?—and there has been no explanation for her “renditioning” across state lines.

We’ve moved into a new phase of Trump lawlessness.

A musician, Oriana Korol, was peacefully playing clarinet with her protest band outside ICE facilities in Portland, OR.

When the band started playing “Ghostbusters,” ICE thugs suddenly poured outside, slammed her into the mud, arrested her and took her to a jail 9 miles away in Vancouver, WA.

This is something I thought about a lot when I was covering politics in Idaho, a huge factor in the GOP there getting pushed so far right was they ran for precinct committeeman seats no one was paying attention to. No reason people who want to change the Democratic Party can’t do the same thing.

in all the discussion (and sometimes tokenizing) of Portland protests being a creative spectacle that neutralizes law enforcement, don’t overlook:

Members of the Unpresidented Brass Band were bull rushed & brutalized in the middle of playing "Ghostbusters." One was sent to the hospital and another tackled, arrested, and taken across state lines where she is still being detained.

The old phrase "twitter isn't real life" no longer applies when one is being governed by online trolls. To them, making real life like twitter is part of the game. Democrats are politicking from a Maginot Line strategy unaware that their opponent is carrying out an entirely different line of attack.
wickdchiq.bsky.social
The presidency is the internet and vice versa. Democrats don’t know the game they’re playing and will move their policies to the right thinking that’s what ppl want. Ppl want the end of the status quo since the status quo isn’t benefitting them. Democrats constantly run on the status quo and lose

I think most people miss that the source of Trump’s ability to create chaos and to execute his propaganda begins and ends with internet and gaming culture. The memes, videos, language all point to those extremely online

It should not be understated how much clever shit like this actually annihilates morale at places like ICE/CBP.

Getting made fun of like this on national television while people laugh at you is.. well, you may call it victory wine, but it ain't.

I suppose one benefit of the Trump administrations gross incompetence is they aren't able to hide the extrajudicial assassinations the way previous US gov'ts have.

Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

It could be argued that concerns over inhumane treatment during the illegal deportation stage following illegal seizure and assault in violation of civil rights by unnamed, masked and unaccountable paramilitary agents is closing the barn door well after the horses are wild and free.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are using a full-body restraint device called the WRAP during deportation flights. The AP spoke to a number of people who said they were placed in the device after they had already been shackled.

Unprecedentedly illegal & unconstitutional crimes - things that make Nixon's presidency-ending crimes look like harmless high school pranks - now happening daily:

Trump is no longer even pretending to have any kind of argument that his murdering of people in the Caribbean Sea has any kind of statutory validity. Just straight up declaring that he has quasi-unlimited power to execute people based on (nominal) suspicion.

So to be sure I understand the MAGA position on this:
•Saying Happy Holidays = War on Christmas
•No teacher led prayer in public schools = War on Jesus
•No 10 Commandments on Courthouse = War on Christianity
•Shooting Christian Pastor in the head = Not Crossing The Line

Got it.

Q: We've seen images out of Chicago of federal agents shooting faith leaders with pepper balls and arresting journalists. Where's the limit for you on what's acceptable conduct by federal agents?

MIKE JOHNSON: I've not seen them cross the line yet.
