I don’t care if the feds know I’m involved in a mutual-aid group or that I help pick people’s fruit trees that would otherwise sit out going rotten in the fall so the apples can go to the food bank. And offer help with pruning in the spring.

So what's the mission? If you look at their own writings, their goal is to "sanctify the secular world" and for members to devote everything they do to the greater glory of God. If you look at what they actually do, though, it's pretty clear: the mission is fascism.

No, really. It was founded by Josemaria Escrivá in 1928 in Spain. Escrivá was closely tied to Franco's regime and was known to praise Hitler, deny the Holocaust, and support authoritarian dictatorships worldwide. Opus Dei members are tied to some of the worst human rights abuses of the 20th century.

Opus Dei is what's called a "personal prelature". Its members, both ordained and laity, are outside the standard hierarchy of the Church. The closest metaphor would be corporate dotted-line reporting on an org chart. It's sort of a hybrid of a global parish and a religious order.

After seven attempts, I couldn't find a local model that would both 1) work well enough to be useful and 2) be ethically trained
