The sheer number of ads touting AI tells you how fucked and over-leveraged these companies are. You don't spend this much on marketing a thing you called "inevitable" unless you are seriously underwater and it ain't inevitable

$140bn on R&D is sooo much. Demonstrates how much cash is there for existing models and AI products, but why would you slow down R&D given how much continued improvement you see model to model?

This house tax pretending is making me more insane than usual because as a renter I’ve had to move every 1-3 years just as standard because rents always rise. And no one cares. House owners get a tiny fraction of that precarity and suddenly it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened

Mumsnet is already on the case.
My elderly mum lives in a London house worth about 2million. She's been there for over 50 years, and is physically and mentally fragile. There is no way she would EVER want to move, the house and her neighbours are her whole world. She has no spare money - at all. (Neither do I, before anyone suggests this!) How is she supposed to manage this? It's not exactly her fault that the value of the property increased so much since my parents bought it all that time ago. I also have a friend, also in London. Both parents sadly died in an accident about 15 years ago, and she used her inheritance to buy a family home which has also increased massively in value. It's probably also worth over 2 million now! She's a single mum on a lower income with 3 kids who very happy at their local school and within their community - what's she supposed to do? It's just not as simple as 'you live in a high-value house, you can obviously afford to pay several grand a year' as RR seems to think. And for anyone who is about to say 'oh tiny violin, their houses are worth two million' - both of these situations are complicated and quite sad in many ways. Neither my mum nor my friend can simply just sell up and move...anyone have any thoughts on this?

This observation about constraining domestic consumption to increase investment - and the vicious politics of that - is particularly important. It is manifestly not grasped by many - including, concerningly, government ministers.

Just asked someone on the train if they didn't have any headphones they could use as the video they were watching was really loud and intrusive. They didn't have any headphones but have apologetically turned it way down and now I feel like a bully.

Charles Darwin briefly discussed dogs’ senses of humor in the 2nd edition of ‘The Descent of Man’ 👇 and then fleshed those ideas out further in ‘The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals’

Most of the more complex emotions are common to the higher animals and ourselves. Every one has seen how jealous a dog is of his master's affection, if lavished on any other creature; and I have observed the same fact with monkeys. This shews that animals not only love, but have desire to be loved. Animals manifestly feel emulation. They love approbation or praise; and a dog carrying a basket for his master exhibits in a high degree self-complacency or pride. There can, I think, be no doubt that a dog feels shame, as distinct from fear, and something very like modesty when begging too often for food. A great dog scorns the snarling of a little dog, and this may be called magnanimity. Several observers have stated that monkeys certainly dislike being laughed at; and they sometimes invent imaginary offences. In the Zoological Gardens I saw a baboon who always got into a furious rage when his keeper took out a letter or book and read it aloud to him; and his rage was so violent that, as I witnessed on one occasion, he bit his own leg till the blood flowed. Dogs show what may be fairly called a sense of humour, as distinct from mere play; if a bit of stick or other such object be thrown to one, he will often carry it away for a short distance; and then squatting down with it on the ground close before him, will wait until his master comes quite close to take it away. The dog will then seize it and rush away in triumph, repeating the same manœuvre, and evidently enjoying the practical joke.

i grew up with double glazing so i've never understood why 90s parents and 90s TV ads were obsessed with it. but now we have two single glazed windows, and jesus. the heat just goes straight out of them even with the curtains closed.
