The X-Files is genuinely a timelessly good show, because when not focusing on overarching conspiracy plot, they would really just focus on a single concept and quite crucially, it would cast an incredible actor to center the episode around who would be utterly god damn captivating to watch.

Taxes are pretty much the only thing related to personal/family finance they do this little "what if that made someone's life difficult" dance for.

Benefits cut to the bone? Not interested
Wages eroded by inflation for decades and decades? Nope.
Technology abolished your job? Nope.

This house tax pretending is making me more insane than usual because as a renter I’ve had to move every 1-3 years just as standard because rents always rise. And no one cares. House owners get a tiny fraction of that precarity and suddenly it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened

All of this “woe is me my house is now really expensive and so a tax is unfair” stuff completely negates to acknowledge the implicit fact that the house owner has made an insane profit by doing absolutely nothing

My elderly mum lives in a London house worth about 2million. She's been there for over 50 years, and is physically and mentally fragile. There is no way she would EVER want to move, the house and her neighbours are her whole world. She has no spare money - at all. (Neither do I, before anyone suggests this!) How is she supposed to manage this? It's not exactly her fault that the value of the property increased so much since my parents bought it all that time ago. I also have a friend, also in London. Both parents sadly died in an accident about 15 years ago, and she used her inheritance to buy a family home which has also increased massively in value. It's probably also worth over 2 million now! She's a single mum on a lower income with 3 kids who very happy at their local school and within their community - what's she supposed to do? It's just not as simple as 'you live in a high-value house, you can obviously afford to pay several grand a year' as RR seems to think. And for anyone who is about to say 'oh tiny violin, their houses are worth two million' - both of these situations are complicated and quite sad in many ways. Neither my mum nor my friend can simply just sell up and move...anyone have any thoughts on this?

What a rotten state of affairs that a teenage girl had thrust upon her the responsibility of being the only adult in the room because actual grown adults refused to recognise her either as a child or, more importantly, as a human being. A sad indictment of a pitiful society.

And that's what these guys are, these guys that marched in Charlottesville, these are the people who are aware of the unspoken premise of this sort of zombie neoliberalism that we're living in, which is that we're coming to a point where there's gonna be ecological catastrophe, and that it's gonna require either massive redistribution of the ill-gotten gains of the first world, or genocide. And these are the first people who have basically said, "Well if that's the choice, then I choose genocide", ", and they're getting everyone else ready, intellectually and emotionally, for why that's gonna be okay when it happens, why they're not really people. When we're putting all this money into more fucking walls and drones and bombs and guns to keep them away, so that we can watch them die with clear consciences, it's because we've been loaded with the ideology that these guys are now starting to express publicly.
