OpenAI’s strategy is very clear, it’s trying to get people - especially young people - so reliant on its products intellectually & emotionally (& now sexually!) that going without them becomes unthinkable. And they need signs of that strategy working to keep the funding flowing in

“[AI is] not a good knockoff. The ultimate goal is never to be as good as the art — the goal is to be good enough to get on the page, get the consumer to use it, and get rid of the worker.” —Molly Crabapple, artist
Can Artists Stop the AI Slop Machine?
A recent workshop in Manhattan's Lower East Side challenged the notion that the takeover of machine learning is inevitable.

I think the best books change you. You’re the person you were before reading Slaughterhouse V, and then you’re the person you’ve become after. That there’s something profound in the words shared with you, tracking the journey, becoming unstuck in time. Living through death, & then you go on living.

the books outlast the tyrants, always will. Milton lives, the Stuarts are gone. Lorca lives, Franco is gone. Isaac Babel lives, Stalin is gone. Bolano lives, Pinochet is gone. & onward

a ceasefire is quite literally the best thing Israel could’ve hoped for at this point and they’re going to ruin this one in less than a week because they can’t stop killing civilians for a single second

as per Donny McCaslin, Bowie was listening to "Black Messiah" during the making of Blackstar (it had come out a month or so before sessions began), and you really hear it in many corners of that record.

"We have an economy where a handful of modern-day robber barons wield extraordinary power. They hold enormous control over our paychecks, our bills, our time, and our futures.

I don't know how many times to point out that is absolutely ghoulish and non-consensual and disgusting behavior.
To exploit the image of a dead woman who was also exploited in real life so you can live out your momentary fantasies of "what is possible" with AI is bad science journalism, also.
Sick.

Marilyn Monroe in Game of Thrones? AI Could Make It Happen Soon

Despite early, and familiar, copyright growing pains, Sora may be the prelude to AI-generated on-demand TV and movies

Screenshot includes an AI generated image of what looks like a human cross between Daenaerys Targaryen and Marilyn Monroe on the back of a dragon.

I look around at all the kids in the hallways, heads raising to meet my gaze with a certain level of pity. Ultimately they wouldn't care.
I look around at all the kids in the hallways, heads raising to meet my gaze with a certain level of pity. Ultimately they wouldn't care. It's simply a more efficient way of delivering the information, regardless of if it was correct or incorrect, if it hallucinated facts or provided accuracy. Regardless of perspective or nuance. Eventually, no one would even know it had ever been any different, for that's the nature of time and progress.
You never think it will come for you until
it does.

soooo my Chicagoans, has anyone else's neighborhood facebook group gone from desperately apolitical (regarding federal politics) to at least 40% about ICE/DHS activity and organizing against it? like it's hard to overstate this shift
