This makes facially neutral policies--like poll taxes and literacy tests--that we know were adopted for discriminatory purposes legal. Organizations can now simply claim there was no discriminatory intent regardless of outcome. It's unconstrained institutionalized racism.

Three Tweets That Capture The Entire Elon Musk Free Speech Con
We've spent years calling out what a hypocrite Elon Musk is on free speech. But sometimes the universe Elon hands you a gift: three tweets in the span of a little over a week that demonstrate the entire con more clearly than any deep dive ever could. Let’s start with this one: That’s Elon announcing that: Falsely labeling non-violent people as “fascist” or “Nazi” should be treated as incitement to murder…

The thing I have found about my current job is that there is no piece of learning I do not use. It's not just about facts (although those, too).

Learning to do proofs taught me patience with material and the skill of banging my head against a brick wall.

If you put powerful AI models directly into the hands of every American warrior, we are going to create so much porn. New frontiers of porn. Porn you haven't even imagined.
Pete Hegseth: "The future of American warfare is here, and it's spelled AI."

He says the military has launched a new platform that  "puts the world's most powerful frontier AI models, starting with Google Gemini, directly into the hands of every American warrior."

Soon French media will start their annual debate whether a Christmas tree is sustainable 🤡.

These well-meaning discussions about items of limited ecological impact, but really important to many people, are truly harmful. They help interested parties pretend ecologists want to ban anything fun.

It sounds like it's just becoming another voc ed school, which is fine, but is not a revolutionary reinvention.

It's the reverse of the process where vocationally-oriented regional schools & teachers' colleges became four-year universities offering a liberal arts education.
I mean, in what sense will you be able to say the college “survived”?

This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

This is how I know I "belong" in academia on some level, even if I missed the boat (I've had a lot going on, between history and health).
these are two slightly different things but the point is that academia runs on two things: helping others and holding grudges. often at the same time and for the same people. we cannot lose this

When are we to expect newspaper front-page interview features with Dr. Beth Upton about her two-year ordeal of having her right to anonymity removed and her name dragged through the mud and being decried as a sexual predator only for a tribunal to clear her and find SHE was discriminated against?

One form of trigeminal neuralgia is post-herpetic neuralgia, from having shingles.

Trigeminal neuralgia is known as one of those "suicide diseases" due to the intensity of the pain you experience.

As someone with trigeminal neuralgia, yeah, you don't want it!
PSA: if anyone in your life is trying to dissuade you from getting the shingles shot, you should probably assume that person hates you, and wants you to suffer. There is literally no other explanation.

Shingles hurts worse than childbirth. Worse than knee surgery. Worst pain of my life.
I am baffled by this because I have had so many friends with shingles and NONE of them made it sound fun. Not one. A vaccine that made me absolutely miserable for 48 hours would still be a huge improvement over the mildest case of shingles I've heard of. (Also it made me tired for 1 day.)

This morning I spent time looking up citations for a student. By the time I got to the third (with zero results), I asked where they got the list, and the student admitted they were from Google’s AI summary.

Honestly though I’m relieved I don’t manage interlibrary loan anymore?

It's a cookie calendar.

Fuck Dr. Oz.
NEW: Dr. Oz is quite literally telling his federal employees to eat less.

“You don't have to try every cookie on the holiday table,” wrote Mehmet Oz in an email to all Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services employees.

The thing I try to explain the most to those who don’t live here is that the Nuzzis of the world live in Washington (the place that deserves your ire) and the rest of us live in D.C., a collection of diverse, mostly quiet, walkable residential neighborhoods with no federal representation
I live in DC. You think “official Washington” didn’t care what Trump administration 2 was likely to do?

Talk to someone who works at NIH. Or State. Or CFPB. Or DOJ. They all knew what was at stake. They were all scared + furious.

And reporters like Nuzzi saw none of it because they didn’t care.

Jared Kushner's involvement was "not mentioned in Paramount's press release on Monday morning about its $108 billion bid, nor were participating sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Qatar."

fancy that
Jared Kushner is part of Paramount's hostile bid for Warner Bros. Discovery
Paramount is telling WBD shareholders that it has a smoother path to regulatory approval than does Netflix.

And they think psychologically breaking a partner will get her to stay
I think an important thing to understand about brofluencer ideology is that they do not just deny that being toxic and shitty makes you a less appealing partner, they insist that women are only genuinely attracted to toxic and shitty men and being kind will instead make women lose respect for you.
I'm starting to wonder how much "the male loneliness epidemic" is just straight and bisexual women identifying low-effort, mean, and incompetent men and choosing not to date, marry, and tolerate them anymore
