Sorry but I came of age in the ‘00s, unless you have explicit proof otherwise, the safest course of action is to assume that every serious adult in the Democratic Party orbit feels pretty good about going to war in Venezuela.

Reactionary centrists are getting everything they wanted out of the UK's Labour party, a purge of trans people from society, a crackdown on immigration, austerity measures on social safety net programs. It's only made Reform more popular and decimated Labour's support.

The answer, hard as it may be, is to grow up enough to not get mad about the idea of someone 'abusing the system' to get mild accommodations that won't even especially benefit them. It's a non-issue and making life harder for even a single disabled person to avoid it is obscene.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

Many are saying 'everyone who so much as gets the coffee at GB News needs to be in prison for the rest of their lives for our society to ever function properly'. I hear it on the train every day.
I don't think I've ever gotten more pissed off while making a video in my life. I hate these people with every bone in my body

It really is precisely the inverse of how much work you actually are doing
The numbers in here are hilarious.

Do you use AI on the job?
Execs: 87%
Managers: 57%
Workers: 27%

Planned investment by 2030: $5T
"Necessary" annual revenue to justify that spend: $650B
Current annual revenue: $50B
Three years into the generative-AI wave, demand for the technology seems surprisingly flimsy

"Interpassivity is so dominant that doing+making are referred to as obstacles to pleasure. You don't read a book because reading is work, LLMs can summarize. You don't learn an instrument because practice is work. Skillsets distract from the time we might set aside for passive consumption."
This week I reach back to the 1990s and the concept of “interpassivity,” a critique of the widespread idea that “interaction” was inherently liberating for an audience. But to think in nuanced and critical ways about creativity with generative AI, the “gesture of disappearance” has new salience.
From Interactive to Interpassive
Where AI Art Meets Cognitive Offloading There is the joke about AI: we wanted robots to do our dishes so we could have time to make art, but we got robots that make art while we do the dishes. We can...

Fascinated by the assertion that there's some system by which "cancelled" artists might earn redemption by making something really good. Wasn't familiar with that policy.
When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

“Colonialism demands history begin past the point of colonization precisely because, under those narrative conditions, the colonist's every action is necessarily one of self-defense. The story begins not when the wagons arrive, but only after they are circled.”

Trans-exclusionary and “gender critical” takes are extremely prevalent in the British media. So I wrote this with the assumption that many readers might not realise that such views are seen as fringe and extreme by the vast majority of feminists outside the UK (and by many within the UK too).
This piece was greenlit and then killed by a British newspaper, so I’ve decided to publish myself instead.

"Gender critical" feminism doesn't help women but it does help the far right

One of the things that the “immigration debate” in the UK really reveals is how little people actually know about how other people live. So much of immigration policy fails to work, even on its own terms, because it’s trying to solve problems that mostly exist in peoples heads

Arming and organising a bunch of people and giving them the right to deploy force in civil spaces is not an effective remedy to the vast majority of the things we consider to be "crime" and the application to this kind of thing is at best a backwards attempt to justify the police's continuation.

We have to talk more how transphobia has taken strong root among well-to-do journalists & politicians when in both the UK & US, the evidence is that voters do not share it.

The demographics of transphobia are people least likely to suffer prejudice in their lives. Richer, maler, whiter, straighter.
Spanberger’s GOP foe spent 57% of her ad budget on anti-trans attacks. Spanberger focused on the economy. You see what won. trib.al/fkMmsR4

The simple truth told time and time again in the polls: The public doesn’t care about trans issues. Voters care deeply about the economy, inflation, & prices.
