I do reader's advisory (make book recommendations)in the western suburbs of Chicago. Public librarian, personal weirdo. Like most middle- aged women, I have lived many lives and know a lot about a lot of different things.
I'm a librarian and we played a game at our work holiday party of trying to match people to their self-declared favorite book of the year. I've been talking up The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by @sgj.bsky.social so much since I read it that everyone in the department got it right. 🦬

It only took four of us making a two-minute public comment about the library at the city council meeting for the councilors to restore the funding the mayor’s office had cut.
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.

it is an underrated miracle of the 21st century that we really did massively, massively reduce bullying in schools
My experience as well. So far we're 2-for-2 on kids having a largely bullying/abuse-free middle school experience. Not without bumpy spots of course, but light years away from what I endured.

My hot take: the anti-bullying stuff has really worked, which is why conservatives are pushing back at it.
for what it’s worth I got roped into helping out with my sixth grader’s extracurricular thing so I’ve had more recent contact with middle schoolers who aren’t mine than I usually do, and biased sample/biased reviewer/etc but my verdict is that the kids are all right

If Sinners isn't very close to the top, it is hella suspect

I would watch this movie
“Have Yourself A Merriam Little Christmas”

Merriam, a career-oriented lexicographer from the city, returns to her small town for the holidays and meets Webster, a ruggedly handsome librarian, who shows her the true DEFINITION of Christmas.

It’s important to note that every single one of these Chicago ICE/ CBP stories DID receive massive coverage by our local media. It was local press together with vigilant residents that documented & then unraveled nearly every lie about the incidents as well.

“Be realistic.”

I refuse to live in your limited notion of what kind of hope, justice and love is possible in this world. There is a key to let us all out of this cage but it cannot be found until we all agree it exists.

Information is "behind a paywall" for lots of reasons. Profit for sure, but also salaries and benefits and lights and heat and roof repair and on and on. Stuff costs money for now, revolution pending. Rather than yoink from a pirate site, why not boost usage stats at your local library instead?

My wokest opinion is that every community deserves an extremely well-funded library that’s open to everyone and that librarians and teachers should make like ten times what they make now.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

I've been reading these, kind of bemused, but this clarified it for me because it reminded me of my husband's accurate observation that I only think things are fun when there's a chance I might die.

Portland resists with whimsical improv theater, Chicago resists by screaming at weird jagoffs that don’t belong in the neighborhood. Every city brings its own strengths to the fight
The energy we need is this suburban dad standing out in the street -- barefoot with Blackhawks pajama pants on -- screaming at the masked goons to get the fuck out of their neighborhood.
