My mom was from Minnesota and would certainly let you know about it, just in very specific contexts. Most of them to do with weather.

(Read: Yes, Mom, I know you had to take your driver's test in the snow. You've said. Many times. Now try parallel parking while going backwards up a hill.)

Reading this anecdote and begging, BEGGING people who are not in creative fields to wrap their brains around the fact that figuring one's way through those stuck transitions *IS THE FUN PART*.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

It exists in a particular context, actually! Performa was a line of Macintosh computers back in the '90s.

(I had the Performa 630 CD. Amazingly, Apple's site still acknowledges its existence: support.apple.com/en-us/112345 )

lede = introductory section in journalism

bury the lede = hiding the most relevant pieces of a story within other distracting information

Allegedly, it’s spelled ‘lede’ to avoid confusion with ‘lead,’ which was the strip of metal that would separate lines of type.

A great article from Rachel, who really understands the heart and soul of Dad’s work.

It’s bizarre that the experiences vary so widely, but they sure seem to, these days. :\

I went to Walgreens in WA for my shot a few weeks ago. They took my word for it it on qualifying conditions (I don’t think it even has to be justified here now), gave me the shot with zero fuss, we had a friendly, funny, understanding chat, and my insurance covered it completely.

Yeah, someone wasn't quite thinking the acronym through at first. :)

Up here in Seattle, when they added a streetcar into South Lake Union, the word "streetcar" was indeed chosen with care. We used to have trolleys, after all. But that would have led to "ride the SLUT," and, well...

(Would have made for a much catchier slogan, though.)

That's what I was about to say. They're probably ALL getting kickbacks.

For some reason I knew he played golf, but hadn't thought about it in ages. This completely tracks, though!

I once had a linguistics teacher from New Zealand. For obvious reasons, she was VERY particular on this point.

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

Every time I light a candle these days, I end up side-eyeing the smoke detector like "don't YOU get any ideas."

(I have yet to set the detector off with a candle. I _did_ manage to do it with the toaster.)

Daily bunny no.3100 is just a branch away
A bunny sits on the branch of a tree at night, sipping tea and looking at the full moon. On the moon, another small bunny is visible, also drinking tea while looking back at the bunny on the tree branch

This was, at least, not in the bathroom, so I didn't feel nearly as exposed, but the house where I grew up had a skylight, and I had a similar experience with a raccoon up on the roof one time, peering into our living room like it wanted to know what on earth we were doing in there.

Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I'll understand, I don't and I won't. If you're just trying to troll me, I've seen way worse, i'll restrict and move on. But please, if you've got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It's dumb, it's a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it's NOT what he'd want.
To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to 'this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that's enough,
, just so
other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening. You're not making art, you're making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it.
Gross. And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it 'the future. Al is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed. You are taking in the Human Centipede of content, and from the very very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.
