"Never spread the lie in the headline" should be a hard rule of 21st century journalism.

Research shows that repeating lies helps to spread them, and people read headlines more than they read stories.
News media has to do better with headlines that present false and unverified public health claims.

Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

So if all the people from “third world countries” should be banned from migrating to America because of a deadly shooting, what are we going to do about all the armed and alienated young white men?

Also, some of us are older & time goes by more quickly as we age, so we think we only got our phone a couple of years ago. Surely we can wait another year?
If a phone still works fine, it’s not “device hoarding” to keep using it. It’s common sense.

Today on Volts: I've had more requests to cover this than almost any other topic in the pod's history, so now, at long last, balcony solar! We dig into how "plug-in solar" took off in Europe & how it's making its way to the US, starting in Utah. Backyard DIY types rejoice!
What's the deal with balcony solar?
Cora Stryker joins me to explain how "plug-in" solar took Europe by storm and is finally, via Utah (?), making its way to America.

Anyway, this recipe for cranberry stewed apples works well. I add 1 teaspoon vanilla at the end because I have homemade vanilla extract on my kitchen counter.

Dear Mr. DiGiorno,

Have you ever read one of those terrible literary novels that are, like, set at a small midwestern college, maybe somewhere in Ohio, and the plot is all about a professor whose marriage is falling apart, and then he has a tragically doomed 1/x

What a general. What a man. General George Henry Thomas is much more worthy of hero worship than that traitor Robert E. Lee.
Union forces had suffered some 5,800 casualties but inflicted twice that on the rebels. When a chaplain asked General Thomas whether the dead should be sorted and buried by state in the new military cemetery, the Virginian who stayed loyal replied "Mix 'em up. I'm tired of states' rights.” (21

We don’t have to pretend that the modern Republican Party is interested in federalism. They’re interested in authoritarianism so long as they are the authorities.

We shouldn't be fighting about American pies, we need to unite against the common enemy: Paul Hollywood in the American Pies episode of GBBO.

It's from one of the early seasons and one of the great pleasures is seeing other Americans experience it and become enraged.

This was literally part of my training when I started working at a bank.

If your boss tells you to do something illegal, don't do it. Not only don't do it, but report your boss for trying to get their employees to break the law for them.

And then we had to take that training again every year.
MS NOW confirms: The FBI is working with Capitol Police to schedule interviews with the six Democratic lawmakers who urged service members to refuse to comply with illegal orders.

Remember kids, the Supreme Court has ruled that the police have no duty to protect the public. "Protect and Serve" is a lie.
You’d think that the way lawless ICE agents are allowed to treat people, while local PDs sit on their hands, would open some eyes to the idea that maybe cops are not the best and only way to protect the public.

For the [ast few years I've been editing the short fiction for Star Ship Sofa, a venerable SF (not F/H) podcast. It's a small joint, and I've turned it primarily into a reprint market as we can afford only $50 per story.

I've also turned it into a reprint market because writers need money fast. 🧵

Wow, I have been seeing some wild takes today. First there's this (& btw, apple pie is good, key lime pie is delightful, and pecan pie has the right to exist)
Apple pie is bad. This is not really debatable. So is key lime pie, while we’re on the topic. Pecan pie is the 🐐 tho.

Congressional stock trading has to be stopped. It’s corrupt, it’s deceptive, and I can’t believe it does not adversely affect critical decisions. We should pay them all a good wage and enable people across the economic spectrum to be able to compete.

Real good thread. There's no making good economic policy w/out solidarity against oppression/exploitation. Even if you look at it only from a voter recruitment angle, beneficial economic policies are unlikely to be recognized quickly by voters for a host of reasons, but solidarity will.
You want to harness economic populism? Then get off your ass and do the difficult work of building solidarity across and through difference. That’s what makes a coalition; just look at who’s winning.

Asking people to abstract their identity away into some aggregate is a failure mode.

Wake up.
