It was never about "free speech", it was always about controlling who got to speak and about what. They didn't like that the academy (for all it's failings) was teaching critical thinking or holding up a mirror to evaluate history through a critical lens.
“At Texas A&M, internal emails show staff are using AI software to search syllabi and course descriptions for words that could raise concerns under new system policies restricting how faculty teach about race and gender.”

it all started with "we need a drink for people who don't like egg nog" "what's the opposite of egg nog? NEGRONIS" I think I happened to see the fountain at Smart & Final while I was buying supplies. Negronis are better the colder they are, so…

It’s hard to make change around golf courses because they are a huge business here. Same with farming (and also humans need food). But AI isn’t YET. We’re being asked to establish another water intensive industry and once we have, it will be difficult to eliminate or change.

It’s not that people in Arizona don’t care about golf courses, livestock, and farming. It’s that those water intensive industries are so well established that change is difficult. AI data centers aren’t. And it’s a reasonable argue that Arizona should not add yet another water intensive industry.

The thing that is missing from the conversations about AI water usage is: once an industry is established and woven into the economy and people’s everyday lives, it is much harder to change or eliminate. (Which is exactly why AI companies are pushing so hard right now to make us so reliant.)

This is my friend's cat. Its name is Cookie Swirl, and it disappeared in the American section of Charlotte airport on 11/10. We're asking for your help. She doesn't have any other socials, so if you can post it widely to see if anyone knows where it is. It's a little thing, but matters a lot to her.
