It's striking that even in the defenses of Bari Weiss's broader thing no one ever says that she or her website does good work. Even the people that admire the success she's had selling lite reactionary shit to rich old guys top out at "people do seem to like it." You could defend Jake Paul that way.

Setting aside platforming, interesting approach here where Friedland focuses on how much energy conservatives spend attacking trans people. He calls Knowles out for doing this for engagement as opposed to sincere belief — something a mainstream interview would never do.

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

Finally read (listened to) Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia.

Excerpts do it a lot of justice; it’s a short book and he’s a clear writer. I was struck by his understanding of overlapping propaganda regimes as well as his growing cynicism about communist regimes even as he physically fought fascists.

It’s certainly informed the opportunities I’ve tried to find for other young people — there’s also a lot more available now, like I know a guy who used Minecraft to teach middle schoolers about construction drafting.

The core proposition of collectible card games remains pretty frustrating though: you hit a level where cheap / free has a 50% win rate and you’re stuck there.

Ultimately, I’ve gotten a lot more fun out of solo games like Slay the Spire, which is a remarkably well balanced game.

Checked out Magic: the Gathering again on a whim and am massively impressed with the big brands they got to do card sets with them: Spiderman, Final Fantasy, Star Trek etc.

No strong feelings -- they're all composite materials and / or chipboard on the inside nowadays. A lot of hardware stores want you to talk to a clerk and go through their software / ordering system so they don't make the most cost-effective options visible to residential customers.

Upgrading these hollow core doors to solid core. New ones are heavy! Learning how to do this wasn’t particularly difficult BUT you really need to remember how the doors and hinges are oriented when you have a door style with a clear up / down pattern.
