Rope some other parents into a creating a Bigfoot party the kids can discover. Turns out it was one of their birthdays, too, and this was all just a mixup. The reveal can be a second cake.

I like to think firefighters have an annual contest to see who gets to botch a turkey fry on the local news as a warning to the community; maybe it's in the union contract

FWIW part of the reason I stepped back from political work was that the word choices felt like they mattered less and less as the media environment changed and liberal funders showed minimal interest in building competing infrastructure.

FWIW I recall advocates saying they felt like "accountability" "reform" and other more neutral terms had been coopted previously. I think people focus way too much on language choices; taking on police is very difficult in part because they have massive PR operations and punish elected officials.

I don’t think it had a plain or ordinary meaning, it was a jump ball. The competitive propaganda analysis is 99% more explanatory than word choice IMO. “Shrink the Police” would still get the same treatment.

Political language is inherently subjective and contested.
November 15, 2025 at 10:55 PM
Language is inherently subjective and can be propagandized around. When climate advocates focused their messaging on clean energy the fossil fuel industry just started calling gas “clean energy.” They even got some Democrats to say “clean coal.”

Elected officials like Chris Murphy are very explicit about this as messaging but then you have to ask how many of them are credible class warrior / class traitor messengers? The union president to senator or House member pipeline should be a lot stronger!

This is a good standard for journalists and elected officials to ask everyone else in the files about.

Hoffman doesn’t seem to fear further revelations. Do they?
November 15, 2025 at 1:08 PM
Not excusing anyone here, but compare Hoffman's apology to public statements from other people who are associated with Epstein or whose close ties are even clearer as more documents comes to light.

Exclusive: Reid Hoffman apologizes for role in Epstein-linked donations to MIT
"The abuse described by Jeffery Epstein’s survivors is abhorrent, horrific, and disgusting."

I’m also trying to recall a short story that may have had “reparations” in the title. It was a time travel story where the Americans had to go back in time to render first aid to victims of the blasts. Must have been in an anthology 20+ years ago.

Dr. Strangelove nailed the grotesque absurdity so well maybe other filmmakers are afraid to try the same tone but maybe they got it right and it’s okay to keep doing that with other variations and modernizations.

I’m guessing they could only afford the Hot President for a day or two but that was also a fun reveal.

By Dawn’s Early Light didn’t hold up for me in some ways but the James Earl Jones salute is pretty satisfying.
