Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

We've been babysitting an injured squirrel until a wildlife rescue could pick the little guy up. (Usually you want to reunite babies, but this one is hurt.) The funny thing is I’ve been told it’s not allowed to wear a sweatshirt if I haven’t attended college XYZ. I’ve ignored that input repeatedly over the years.

If you want to wear it, wear it. If someone asks, say yes I went there.

It’s their problem not yours.

It’s having 5 who are all the same age/development stage that’s exhausting me. And the big cats. Normally I have 3-5 kittens with an age spread between everyone. That’s manageable
