It was never just about trans people. We were an easy target.
The wedge is driven home and now they advance their strategy...

Trans people have been warning about these people for *years*

This is a huge story but massively under the radar in the UK.

A US Christian legal org called the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is working to roll back abortion rights here using the same playbook it used in the US: briefing politicians, watching, waiting.

People who angrily denied that Israel was committing the war crime of blocking food and medical supplies are today demanding that it be praised for partially lifting it's block on food and medical supplies.

There was a great article years ago where someone interviewed billionaires concerned about their personal security forces post-apocalypse and when the interviewer suggested they just treat them well, like family, the billionaires just scoffed. I'm sure this is what each of their guards was thinking.

"I once met a former bodyguard of one billionaire with his own bunker, who told me his security team's first priority, if this really did happen, would be to eliminate said boss and get in the bunker themselves.'

The techbros will be the first to be torn to pieces by mobs if society collapses

a reminder, as Naoise Ó Cearúil defends building more and more data centres on #TonightVMTV, that he thinks there's no conflict of interest in sitting on the Oireachtas AI committee while he holds shares in an AI company

AI committee FF TD has stock in IDF-vet-founded AI company
It was co-founded by a man who “conducted classified intelligence work” for the Israel Defense Forces.

much of Connolly's (and the left in general's) criticism of the EU (especially re nice/lisbon) has been borne out

the EU institutions are rolling back environmental and social protections, often in return for trade deals. the EU/NATO venn diagram is almost a circle. on gaza they've been pathetic.

Re: Connolly's comments a decade ago on EU/Brexit, her diagnosis of many underlying problems is correct - although her conclusions I severely disagree with.

However, again the response from some quarters has been essentially screaming "all criticism of the EU is inherently bad!". Unserious.

Need to get a "Critique of powerful institutions is good actually" sign to tap now that people can't differentiate between that and conspiracy nonsense

Exactly. The acceptance of nuance, the right to dissent & the right to advocate for better from within, even when it goes against the grain (or the messaging of a massive system) is sadly being somewhat lost. It's one of the biggest barriers to positive change at the moment.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
Just because change may be extremely difficult & sometimes nearly impossible, it doesn't mean that people should never & could never commit to advocating for that change from within.

We really shouldn't be moving towards a culture where the only acceptable opinions are 100% all-in or all-for.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
Yep, imo critique & analysis about what ultimately ends up as EU-wide policies & law should be welcomed & not automatically interpreted as pro-leave.

There's an oddly black & white thing going on where it's forgotten that we absolutely should critique & highlight flaws within our own systems.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
Huge congratulations!!! 👏🥳
geraldineishere.bsky.social
No, so far I haven't been able to find any direct quote of her "congratulating" the British.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
Yep, for a long time! There's some gorgeous examples of good quality Irish linen in Collins Barracks.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
I still view it as reformist because while reform is very difficult & (yes) at times unrealistic, I don't believe that things are so black & white that there are not people who still believe in changing systems from within. Even systems as massive as the EU.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
That's not the read I got on what she said at all, but I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on that.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
a critique of the expectancy that people should always vote for EU polices even if they're harmful or undemocratic.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
Your other example is a bit blurry & there's no alt text so unfortunately I can't really absorb it. If it's what I think it is, I always viewed it as a critique of the Irish govt for not having contingency plans in place &
geraldineishere.bsky.social
I see the first reply as someone expecting another nation's democratic choice and rejection of certain things that they didn't feel align with their values/needs anymore. I also see it as someone who sees flaws within the EU, which there are. I don't see it as someone who is pro-leave.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
I agree, I think the "reformist rather than rejectionist" distinction is it.

It would be weird to expect that everyone part of (& intending to remain part of) something like the EU thought that better policies etc. shouldn't ever be discussed or explored.
geraldineishere.bsky.social
I think people are conflating her comments about things (policies, treaties etc.) that can always be improved upon with being entirely anti-EU.

Whereas I see someone living in a democracy where we're still allowed to critique & highlight flaws within systems we belong in 🤷‍♀️

Oh god damn, this is *so* much worse than it initially read. Her body language and facial expressions as the question is being asked says it all, as does her little laugh after she says she wasn't aware.

She knew, and doesn't give a shit.

Keira Knightley cares so little about trans people that she couldn't even be bothered to prep an answer about working w/ Rowling & just seemed very angry to be asked. And no, I don't believe that she didn't know. Come on. www.reddit.com/r/Fauxmoi/co...

This. The written coverage of it really didn't capture how pissed she was about being asked this question or the condescending tone of her response. Nasty.

Respect to the interviewer for asking the question because I'm sure there's possible consequences for annoying the talent on a press tour.

A big pet peeve of mine is when Ireland gets lumped in with the UK on stuff like this. Hopefully enough people contact them & complain that they sort it out.
