I really hope so.

In recent months, I've met some individuals who have been quietly involved in efforts to hold onto and assert Ireland's anti-colonial and internationalist traditions of neutrality and global social justice for 50+ years. We owe them a debt and have so much to learn from them.

It is bizarre and tragic that we hear so little about China in Ireland - Chinese history, culture, development, politics.

Thanks to @helenasheehan.bsky.social for this thoughtful account of her personal and political encounter with the country.

Next Wednesday, Rundale will host a second public talk in Clarke's City Arms.

The theme is drawn from November's issue which covers dependency, the contradictions of capitalist technology and the need for democratic planning - from Ardnacrusha to data centres to biogas.

There has been almost nothing on @news.rte.ie, the national broadcaster, about the US military build up in the Caribbean and threatened invasion of Venezuela. At the same time, we get well-paid columnists asking why Irish people are 'anti-American'?

We need all the independent media.
November 25, 2025 at 10:05 PM
Predictable Irish war hawks falling over themselves today because the FT wrote an article about Ireland's 'defencelessness'.

Rory Rowan, Pat Brodie and I have an article coming out that hopefully provides some critical analysis on what we call the 'militarisation of FDI'.

What an inspiration Margaretta D'Arcy has been - doing all she could to oppose war, advance peace and protect neutrality.

We need to be inspired by her now more than ever.

Getting to this late but much needed insight from former Irish ambassador to Russia.

Speaks directly to a handful of senior academics and commentators who close down debate by bullying those who dissent from their belligerent opinions.

Rather than jettisoning the Triple Lock (under pressure from certain EU core states), Ireland should be advocating it be adopted in other member states.
Any European (non-NATO) army should be based on the Irish treble lock: no deployment outside the EU without: a UNSC or UNGA U4P authorisation + EU federal government (or for now: EU Council)- + EP approval.
November 23, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Hopefully some leaders in EU recognise this.

'By working to hollow out the only serious negotiation on the table, Europe is not protecting Ukraine; it is condemning it to more bloodshed and itself to strategic irrelevance.'

Is the EU already trying to sabotage new Ukraine peace plan?
The goal appears not to be a better peace, but to hollow out the American proposal until it becomes unacceptable to Moscow

So much talk & speculation about Russian threats to Ireland that just doesn't bear much scrutiny.

As this article clarifies itself, Russian ships are entitled to be in waters 12 miles from the coast - all we can do is monitor them. Why would we need fighter jets?

Ireland 'quite constrained' in dealings with approaching Russian spy ship
The ship has already been accused of “deeply dangerous” behaviour by British Defence Secretary John Healy.

Front page of the IT today is a story about a single jamming incident attributed to Russia that happened in 2022. Other jamming incidents not attributed to Russia are also reported, judged by officials to be “low risk”.

How is this reasonable reporting on defence and security?

The EU is implementing an emergency plan for 'Military Mobility' that would effectively mean Ireland waiving checks on munitions or military equipment moving through our territory.

A wartime measure pushed through without any clear public scrutiny, undermining our neutrality.

'If a bridge can't carry a 60 tonne tank, we have a problem'.

The speed with which planning and finance are mobilised for the militarisation of EU transport infrastructure, versus planning and finance for public, decarbonised, climate resilient infrastructure is startling.
The fast movement of Europe's militaries is essential for European defence.

We have to ensure that forces can be in the right place and at the right time.

It is quite simple: the faster we can move forces, the stronger our deterrence and defence.
