Women’s Business
While reading a book about the history of the Bluestockings, I was thunderstruck by this quotation from a “conduct manual” for women from the 1760s. It said, “Your business chiefly is to read Man, in order to make yourselves agreeable and useful.” This was the advice for women, then, to help them steer clear of the danger of reading books and becoming (gasp!) the dreaded Learned Ladies.

DOGE was not a money-saving effort. It was an effort to chase down and prove right-wing conspiracy theories. They went after USAID to prove conspiracy theories about foreign aid. Then they went after SSA to, again, pursue conspiracy theories about Dems paying "illegals" to vote. 1/2
All DOGE accomplished was purging critical government staff, handing private data to outsiders, and sentencing thousands in developing countries to death by gutting USAID.
I don’t say this lightly: if there were any justice in this world, the people responsible for this devastation would be in jail

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Something to remember is that Gmail has always read your emails for the purposes of ad targeting. It's been part of the service from the very beginning and was always the reason it's free. But turning off the extra AI features is still a good thing to do if we're going to use the service at all.
Found out today that Gmail quietly added a thing where AI scraps all your emails, including attachments.
Disabling it is easy but, of course, buried. Here's how:

My Art Won’t Buy Me a Car
In the drawing, my show was a delicate rare plant kept in a glass box that I was doing my best to protect and grow. It reminded me of how delicate a work of art can be and how much effort we have to make to protect its fragility. Simultaneously, many of us weigh down our works with our hopes and dreams that this one will be the one that changes everything.

A Blurry Line Between Art and Advertising
To get to the exhibit, I took the shuttle from Times Square and was about to walk up the stairs to Grand Central Station when I noticed two people taking photos of the stairs. It suddenly dawned on me that the image on the stairs was not an advertisement but part of the exhibition I was on my way to see.
